Previous editing, stating that Dan Crane had represented this district is wrong. Dan Crane represented a district on the east side of Illinois, including Champaign, and not the west side of the state, as the 17th is, which includes area along the Mississippi river. Republican previous to Democrat Lane Evans was one of the Republicans on the House Watergate committee who voted for Nixon's impeachment. That congressman was defeated in the Republican primary, in 1982, and that is when Lane Evans was elected.--John Keohane keohane@prodigy.net
