Andy Reid (born July 29, 1982 in Dublin) is an Irish professional footballer who currently plays for Charlton Athletic. He is 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs 11 stone. He usually plays left side of midfield but can also operate down the right side or just off the striker.
Reid started his career with Nottingham Forest. He turned professional in August 1999 and went on to score 25 goals in 160 appearances, including several spectacular efforts including an 80 yard run followed by a 30 yard lob against West Ham. After protracted negotiations lasting for the bulk of his last season at the club, Reid completed his move from Nottingham Forest to Tottenham on the last day of the January 2005 transfer window along with Michael Dawson, for a reported combined fee of £8 million. However, despite Dawson becoming well-established in the team, Reid was in and out of the team before joining Charlton for up to £3 million on the 16 August 2006. He opened his account for Charlton with a hard low drive against Everton on 25 November.
He has also made an impact on the international scene having earned 19 caps and scored 3 goals for the Republic of Ireland. He debuted with a 'man of the match'-winning performance in a 3-1 defeat of Canada. The first of his international goals was a 40 yard free kick against Bulgaria. The second was even better as he drove in a 25 yard curler from open play against Cyprus in a World Cup qualifier, which was a contender for Eircom goal of the year. He also scored a consolation goal in a 2-1 friendly defeat by Italy. Also he opened up the scoring in the last game at Lansdowne Road before redevelopment. Ireland won 5-0 against San Marino.
Andy Reid has often been criticised over his weight, seemingly struggling to lose weight and keep it off, particularly after long spells injured.[citation needed] Despite these issues with his fitness Andy Reid really has shown his talent as a playmaking midfielder, and a wonderful striker of the ball with his left foot.
