[edit] Biography

When McCoy was 13 years old, his brother Ilkka introduced Pete Malmi to him. Together the two formed the first ever Finnish punk rock band - Briard. From 1977 onwards, the band released a couple of singles ("I Really Hate You / I Want You Back" was the first) and performed numerous show. The line-up of the band varied during the years they were together and finally Briard disbanded 1979.

[edit] Hanoi Rocks

During 1979 Andy McCoy formed Hanoi Rocks in Finland along with Michael Monroe and guitarist Nasty Suicide. Before the band fully took off, McCoy and Monroe played some shows with famous Finnish punk act Pelle Miljoona; Monroe played saxophone live and McCoy played on their hit album Moottoritie On Kuuma. It was in this band that McCoy met Sami Yaffa and asked him to join Hanoi Rocks.

McCoy quit Pelle Miljoona in 1981, to fully focus on Hanoi Rocks and to relocate to Stockholm, Sweden. The band released "Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks" first, this gained attention from the British press and they soon relocated to London, England.

Hanoi would continue on until 1985, releasing four more studio albums including one, "Two Steps from the Move" was produced by Bob Ezrin. The band had gained a large following in Finland during its time, becoming the country's biggest ever rock band. After their drummer Razzle died in a car acccident, the band soon dissolved.

[edit] Projects through the late 1980s and early 1990s

After Hanoi Rocks broke Andy McCoy involved himself in various bands and projects. First he formed the Cherry Bombz, a supergroup which featured several notable artists such as Nasty Suicide, Anita Chelman of Toto Coelo, Dave Tregunna of Sham 69 and Lords of the New Church as well as Terry Chimes drummer from punk rock legends The Clash. During 1986 he recorded as the Suicide Twins with Nasty Suicide as a one off project.

McCoy played live with Iggy Pop's solo band in 1988 around the "Instinct"-era, this same year Andy put out his own solo debut album "Too Much Ain't Enough". The Cherry Bombz disbanded two years later during 1990, making way for Shooting Gallery to be formed. This band featured more notable faces from the rock world including, Dave Tregunna, Dany Fury (Stiv Bators), Paul Garisto (Iggy Pop and Psychedelic Furs) and two members from London glam punk Kill City Dragons, which Hanoi Rocks had influenced, named; Steve Von Saint and Billy G. Bang. Together the band recorded only one album.

[edit] McCoy continues Solo career

After the break-up of Shooting Gallery, McCoy continued his solo career; recording the electic sounding album "Building On Tradition", whchh draws influence form flamenco as well as forms of rock music.

Andy's eccentric lifestyle has been documented in the film The Real McCoy, which had its world premiere in 1999 in the Gothenburg film-festival in Sweden and the Berlin Film Festival in Germany along with many other awards. Also, following the success of the Internationally acclaimed film, MTV3 aired The McCoys Show, a Finnish reality TV-show about the day to day adventures of Andy and his wife, Angela Nicoletti McCoy.

In 1999, as a part of the film The Real McCoy marketing campaign, the producing company raised money to fix Andy McCoy's teeth which were badly damaged by methadone.

[edit] Reforming of Hanoi Rocks

In the summer of 2001 Andy together with Michael Monroe did some gigs at Finnish Rock festivals as Hanoi Revisited. In 2001 Andy McCoy also released an autobiography called Sheriffi McCoy, so far only published in Finnish. But the plans still are to translate it to other languages.

March 27th 2002 the rebirth of Hanoi Rocks became official. The members were Andy McCoy, Michael Monroe, Costello (guitar), Timpa (bass) and Lacu (drums). They soon released a single "People like me" and toured in Finland, Sweden, Japan, Spain, UK and Italy before the year was over. The Album “Twelve shots on the rocks” follows.

2003 and 2004 Hanoi Rocks continued extreme touring, with gigs one just Has to see, and released a couple of singles. They recruited Conny Bloom and A/C Christell formerly of The Electric Boys. The band begun to work with the new album in the fall, Another Hostile Takeover, which was released in Finland on March 30th 2005, and was released to the rest of Europe in February 2006 on Demolition Records.
