Andrey Boreyko

Andrey Boreyko (Andrei Wiktorowitsch Borejko, russian Андрей Викторович Борейко; * July 22, 1957 in Leningrad) is the Principal Conductor of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra (Hamburger Symphoniker), and Principal Conductor of the Bern Symphony Orchestra

He is one of the most exciting and dynamic conductors to emerge from Eastern Europe in recent years. He is currently in his final season as Music Director of Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and he also holds the positions of Chief Conductor of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra and Chief Conductor of Bern Symphony Orchestra.

At the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory, he studied conducting (with Elisabeta Kudriavtseva and Alexander Dmitriev), graduating summa cum laude. International recognition came in 1987, when he won diplomas and prizes at the Grzegorz Fitelberg conductors' competition in Katowice and again in 1989 at the Kiril Kondrashin conductors' competition in Amsterdam.

Between 2000 and 2003 Mr Boreyko was Principal Guest Conductor of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Renowned for his innovative approach to programming, Andrey Boreyko (together with Jena Philharmonic, where he held the position of Music Director 1998 – 2003) received awards from the German Music Critics (Deutscher Musikverleger-Verband) for the most innovative concert programming in 1999/2000, 2000/01 and 2002/03 – an unprecedented achievement in the entire history of this prize.

Mr Boreyko has appeared as guest conductor with such orchestras as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Berlin Philharmonic, Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, St.Petersburg Symphony, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Royal Flanders Philharmonic, Sydney, Melbourne, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Symphony, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, BBC Symphony, Bamberg, Danish National Symphony, Stuttgart Radio and RAI Turin. He has toured Germany, Portugal and Spain with Munich Philharmonic, and the US with the Czech Philharmonic – culminating in a concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

Recent engagements have included concerts with Los Angeles Philharmonic, Detroit, Pittsburgh, London Symphony and a re-invitation to Chicago Symphony. Future commitments include concerts with Philadelphia, Oslo Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Dresden, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Dallas, Toronto Symphony and a re-invitation to the Munich Philharmonic.

Andrey Boreyko is a strong advocate of contemporary music and he has a special relationship with such composers as Brett Dean, Leonid Desyatnikov, (conducting the world premiere of Russian Seasons with Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica in St. Gallen/Switzerland Festival), Bernd Franke, Henryk Gorecki, Sofia Gubaidulina, Giya Kancheli, Arvo Pärt, Alexander Raskatov and Valentin Silvestrov.

His discography includes works by Ginastera, Bloch, Silvestrov and Takemitsu, with the latter recorded with Gidon Kremer and the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin. His most recent release was for Teldec, with the wonderful young virtuoso trumpet player Sergei Nakariakov.
