From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andrew Ilie (born April 18, 1976 in Bucharest, Romania) is a former tennis player, who turned professional in 1994 and became a citizen of Australia. He has won two singles career titles (Coral Springs, 1998 and Atlanta, 2000). Ilie reached his highest individual ranking on May 29, 2000, when the righthander ranked 38 in the world.

Ilie quickly became a fan favourite, developing an almost cult-like following whenever he played at the Australian Tennis Open in Melbourne, Australia, despite his relatively modest career achievements. He delighted spectators with adventurous and occasionally outrageous shots, and by ripping his shirt off in glee whenever he won a match, which further endeared him to his legion of fans.
