Andre Simon (wine critic)

Andre Simon (1877-1970) was born in Paris and moved to London in 1902, where he was the English agent for the champagne house of Pommery and Greno. He established what became the International Food and Wine Society and devoted much of his later life to that organization. [1]

As a member of the English school of wine critics, Simon’s style was florid, an example being when he described a particular wine as "a girl of fifteen, who is already a great artist, coming on tip-toe and curtseying herself out with childish grace and laughing blue eyes." (McCoy)

It was in reaction to this style that Robert M. Parker, Jr. developed his 100-point rating scale combined with highly specific descriptions.
