Andre Berto

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andre Mike Berto (born September 7, 1983 in Miami, Florida) is an American-born Haïtian-American boxer, who competed on behalf of Haïti in the 2004 Summer Olympics. He is called "Mike", his middle name.

[edit] Amateur

2003 at the World Championships in Bangkok, he won the bronze medal for the United States in the welterweight (–69 kg) division losing to Cuban Lorenzo Aragon.

In 2004, after being disqualified against Juan McPherson in the US box-offs he decided to go to the Olympics for Haiti (even though he had never set foot on the island).

This resulted in a bizarre "international" match in the North American qualifications against his friend Vanes Martirosyan who fought for the US. Berto lost but both fighters qualified for the games anyway.

After all that he did go to Athens but lost in the first round to a Frenchman named Xavier Noel (34 :36). Andre Berto's unlikely Olympic experience was over after just one fight.

[edit] Pro

He has a typical pro style and won his first 17 fights at welterweight getting good reviews for speed and power (15 KOs). Having spent years training in the same Florida gyms with world champions like Winky Wright and Jeff Lacy payed off for him so far, defense is still a problem. He is promoted by Lou DiBella and has fought average opposition so far, in December 2006 he stopped Miguel Figueroa (record 24-5) on HBO.
