He made his debut, age 25, in 1989 against the World XV in a game the Springboks won 20-19. His final appearance in the Green and Gold came in 1997 when they demolished the hapless Australian Wallabies 61-22 in Pretoria.

He was first choice fullback for the Natal Sharks in the inaugural Super 12 competition helping them reach the finals against the Auckland Blues.

He played his last competitive rugby match in the 1999 Currie Cup Final for his beloved Natal team against the Gauteng Lions. It was Ian McIntosh the beloved Natal coach’s last match as coach. It was Gary Teichmann’s last match, and he had been Natal’s heroic captain for many years. It was André Joubert’s last match, and he was above all the hero of the passionately partisan Natal supporters. It was a sad farewell for three of Natal’s favourite sons as the Lions lifted the cup with a convincing 32-9 victory.
