[edit] History

Before 1945, Andheri was administered by a Collector in charge of the "Suburban District". With the creation of Greater Bombay in 1945, the administration was merged with the rest of Mumbai city. Andheri has a population exceeding four million, and as per record is by far the most populous suburb of Mumbai.

One of the oldest residential areas in Andheri is Dhake Colony on Versova Road, Andheri West. The five buildings in the area were built around 1950, and they served as a landmark until recently. The area is now known as D.N. Nagar.

The other old area in Andheri is Bhardawadi. This lane forms a vital link with S.V. Road for the residents of Versova Road. It has been inhabitated for the last ninety years. In the past, there were bungalows on this road; these gave way to buildings, alhough there are still a few old bungalows, which is rare in Mumbai. This lane bustles with the sound of traffic which passes through it to reach S.V. Road.

Contributing to Andheri's history is a popular Ganesha temple, Shree Vanchasiddhi Vinayak Ganesh Mandir, created in 1926.

Andheri West connects to an island, the Versova gaon, also known as Fishing village. This connection wad made in the 1950s by constructing a single lane road surrounded by sea water. The area around this road was later filled to develop areas now known as D.N. Nagar, Four Bungalows, Seven Bungalows, and Dhake Colony among others.

Andheri (east) contains pockets of attractive residential areas, with quiet, tree-lined streets, easy connectivity to the Western Express Highway, and without the congestion and pepetual traffic jams that afflict most residential areas in suburban Mumbai. The plan of connecting Versova to Ghatkopar(a central suburb) with Metro rail has started doing work for expanding the road for the construction. After the Metro is built which is supposed to be running in 2011 will reduce the travelling time to 20 minutes from the present 1hour 45minute travelling time.
