Anderson County (standard abbreviation: AN) is a county located in east-central Kansas, in the central United States. The population was estimated to be 8,182 in the year 2005.[1] Its county seat and most populous city is Garnett.

Following amendment to the Kansas Constitution in 1986, the county remained a prohibition, or "dry", county until 1996, when voters approved the sale of alcoholic liquor by the individual drink with a 30% food sales requirement.[2]

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,513 km² (584 mi²), of which 1,510 km² (583 mi²) is land and 4 km² (1 mi²), or 0.24%, is water.[3]

Anderson County's population was estimated to be 8,182 in the year 2005, an increase of 83, or +1.0%, over the previous five years.[1]
As of the U.S. Census in 2000,GR2 there were 8,110 people, 3,221 households, and 2,264 families residing in the county. The population density was 5/km² (14/mi²). There were 3,596 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (6/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.41% White, 0.32% Black or African American, 0.74% Native American or Alaska Native, 0.22% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.09% of the population.
There were 3,221 households out of which 31.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.90% were married couples living together, 6.90% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% were non-families. 26.80% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.60% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the county the population was spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 24.60% from 25 to 44, 22.10% from 45 to 64, and 20.00% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $33,244, and the median income for a family was $39,101. Males had a median income of $30,102 versus $20,705 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,458. About 10.60% of families and 12.80% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.30% of those under age 18 and 11.00% of those age 65 or over.
