Andau (Hungarian: Mosontarcsa) is a village in Burgenland, Austria near the Hungary border.

[edit] History

Andau and all of Burgenland belonged to Hungary until 1921. From 1898 onwards, the community had been forced by the Magyarization movement to change its name to Mosontarcsa. With the end of the First World War and the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon, the territory was given to Austria, where it formed part of the new state of Burgenland.

During the Hungarian revolution of 1956, refugees escaped the communist regime by crossing the border from Hungary into Austria through this small village. This was memorialized by James A. Michener in his book The Bridge at Andau.
