Anbu gives up, Naruto's memory (Japanese: 暗部もお手上げ ナルトの記憶 - Anbu mō teage, Naruto no kioku) is episode 198 of the anime series Naruto.
[edit] Plot
Naruto is being interrogated by ANBU, who ask him if his first meeting with Gennou was at the Ichiraku Ramen Bar. Naruto cannot remember the details of their conversations even after the ANBU questioners hint that they have been spying on Naruto for some time. When Naruto still demurs, the ANBU interrogators tell him that he will be put under reverse hypnosis.
Naruto, hypnotized remembers meeting Gennou outside the restaurant. As we saw earlier, Gennou barely eats any of his ramen, instead he's giving most of it to Naruto.
Meanwhile the other teams scan the village for more clues. Neji and Hinata are using their Byakugan to search the village for the hidden plans or any sign of strange alterations or traps. Kiba and Shino discover that the smokescreen has destroyed the scent of the enemy, but Shino wonders why Gennou would go to that length but then not even more careful in the planning of his escape route. Sakura and Ino visit the body, only to discover that it's being pieced back together with medical jutsus. Sakura forces herself to watch the gruesome process while Ino waits outside.
Naruto, still hypnotized, keeps talking about ramen much to the frustration of ANBU. But he does manage to remember Gennou showing him a picture of his grandson and mentioning treasure hunting. He also recalls seeing a scar on Gennou's hand. ANBU breaks off the questioning after getting a message from Tsunade.
Assembled, Team Guy, Asuma and Kurenai (minus Ino) discuss their findings: nothing out of the ordinary with the buildings and Gennou's eating habits. Shikamaru has just sent everyone out again in new groups when he is summoned by Tsunade. She tells him that the hidden Waterfall village seems to be massing for an attack on the village and that Gennou had been seen with them. She tells Shikamaru that she will be sending the genin in to back up the jonin, but Shikamaru surprises them both by telling them it doesn't seem necessary, telling them that he doesn't see that it would make much difference and, more importantly he thinks something is very fishy about the whole Gennou matter. Like Shino, he is incredulous that someone who seems to have proved a master infiltrator would fall so easily to ANBU without setting a single trap. Instead, Shikamaru figures that sending all the ninja away is part of Gennou's plan.
Free from hypnosis, Naruto finds himself back at Ichiraku Ramen thinking about how strange it was that Gennou came so often to the ramen stand when, really, he didn't seem to like ramen all that much. He meets up with Choji and Shikamaru to pore over more old records at the head carpenter's office while Shikamaru bites his nails and wonders why Gennou took the supposedly authentic letter of recommendation and left the fake one.
At the site of the explosion, Tenten informs the rest of the genin about evidence of a second explosion and note that ANBU never saw the exact moment of explosion. They figure that Gennou could have faked his death by setting notes all over the forest. Ino at the same time realizes that the hands of the body are too clean to have been those of a carpenter, even a fake one. There is also no scar on his hand. Hinata confirms it with her Byakugan: the body before them all has never drawn chakra and cannot be a shinobi.
At the border, Guy sets the terms of war: if a ninja from the hidden Waterfall village crosses the nearby river, the attacks will begin. However, the next report to come in is that the Hidden Waterfall seem to be retreating: they really had just being conducting a training exercise!
Back at the head carpenter's house, Shikamaru asks about a scroll showing a payment for construction on the ninja academy that has no plans to go with it. They are interrupted when a bird suddenly drops a sack of scrolls on the town. They appear to be the missing blueprints.
