[edit] History

Known colloquially as Amy's, Amy's Ice Creams was started by Amy Miller in 1984. While in Boston, as a premedical major at Tufts University, Amy worked for Steve's Ice Cream. After Steve's Ice Cream was purchased by a larger corporation, Amy decided to go into business for herself. Amy and her business partner Scott Shaw eventually decided to open their ice cream shop in Austin. They wrote a hot check for the lease of the Guadalupe Store. Amy has since opened 12 more locations.

[edit] Ice creams

Amy's offers over 300 flavors of ice cream and fruit ices (a non-dairy alternative similar to sherbet).[1] Of this large number of flavors, only a small portion are available at a particular store at any given time. The most popular of these flavors is Mexican Vanilla.

Every Amy's location always offers the following seven flavors (known as standards):

Ice cream can be ordered in three sizes: Tiny (4 ounces), Small (6 ounces), and Large (8 ounces). For the small and large sizes of ice cream, "Crush'ns" can be mixed in. These Crush'ns can include almonds, walnuts, pecans, mixed nuts, oatmeal cookies, chocolate chip cookies, Oreos, Cameos, Nutter Butters, Reeses Cups, Butterfingers, Kit Kats, M and Ms (plain and peanut), heath bar, chocolate chips, fresh strawberries, bananas, Whoppers, Junior Mints, Twix, cookie dough, granola, raisins, coconut, Grape Nuts, marshmallows, Snickers, graham crackers, ginger snaps, hot fudge, butterscotch, pecan praline, gourmet chocolate sprinkles or any number of other food items that is somewhat dependent on the location. For the tiny size, Crush'ns can be placed on top of the ice cream. Pints and Quarts are also available.

[edit] Employees

Amy's application process strives to create a unique and creative group of people to serve and manage each location.

The paper application is a white paper bag. The only requirements are to write a name and contact information somewhere on the application. Applicants are encouraged to be creative and applications have included decorated bags, short stories, and videos placed in the bag.

Many employees of Amy's will do "tricks" with the ice cream as they prepare it. These include, but are not limited to, throwing the ice cream off the spade behind the back, under the leg, and over people. At the Arboretum location, it is also popular to go outside and launch the ice cream over the fountain in the courtyard adjoining Amy's.
