Amroha is a town in northwestern Uttar Pradesh state in northern India, the administrative headquarters of Jyotiba Phule Nagar district. It is located west-northwest of Moradabad town, on the Sot River.

The town was blessed and developed by Syed Sharfuddin Shah Wilayat, who migrated from Wasti, Iraq to India. The name of Amroha is usually seen as deriving from its produce of mangoes (aam) and fish (rohu fish). Amroha is a marketplace for agricultural produce, its main industries are pottery making, hand-loom weaving, and sugar milling. Colleges affiliated to MJP Rohilkhand University are also located there. Amroha is connected by rail with Moradabad and Delhi.

People from Amroha often use the surname Amrohvi. Many intellectual and talented people have originated from Amroha, for example: Hujjatul Islam Maulana Syed Mohammad Ibadat Naqvi, Maulana Syed Aulad Hasan Naqvi (who laid the foundation of the first Shia mosque of Amroha that is Ashraful Masjid at Mohalla Shafaat Pota),Syed Mehdi Raza Taqvi (who built Azakhana Wazeer Un Nisaor Bara Imambara - Danishmandan Picture& Detail), Maulana Syed Zafar Hasan Naqvi,Rais Amrohvi, Qaem Amrohvi, Kamal Amrohvi, Maulana Sarwar Hussain, Najmul Millat), Maulana Syed Hamidul Hasan, Maulana Syed Mohammad Shakir Naqvi Amrohvi,Dr. Tausiful Hasan Naqvi, Nazar Amrohvi, and the renowned painter Sadequain. The famous Urdu poet Jaun Elia also came from Amroha.

Amroha is a well renowned palce for its azadari and moharram processions.

The current Imam-e-Juma of Amroha is Maulana Syed Mohammad Siyadat Naqvi, who leads the Friday prayer in the Ashraf-ul-Masajid Mosque.

There are communities of people from Amroha living in Houston, Texas, USA and Karachi, Pakistan.

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Amroha had a population of 164,890. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Amroha has an average literacy rate of 44%, lower than the national average of 59.5%; with 59% of the males and 41% of females literate. 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.
