Wiang Kaen (Thai: เวียงแก่น) is the easternmost district (Amphoe) of Chiang Rai Province, northern Thailand.

The government separated the area of Wiang Kaen from Chiang Khong district to create a minor district (King Amphoe) on April 1st, 1987. It was upgraded to a full district on September 7th, 1995.

Historically, the area was Mueang Wiang Kaen, located on the Ngao river bank. It was founded in the same time of Sukhothai kingdom and Chiang Rai.

Neighboring districts are (from the south clockwise) Thoeng, Khun Tan, Chiang Khong of Chiang Rai Province. To the east are Bokeo and Oudomxai provinces of Laos.

The district is subdivided into 4 communes (tambon), which are further subdivided into 41 villages (muban). There are no municipal (thesaban) areas, and 4 Tambon administrative organizations (TAO).
