Khun Tan (Thai: ขุนตาล) is a district (Amphoe) of Chiang Rai Province, northern Thailand.

The government separated 3 tambons of Thoeng district to create the minor district (King Amphoe) Khun Ta on April 1st, 1992. The minor district office located in Tambon Pa Tan. It was upgraded to a full district on December 5th, 1996.

The name Khun Tan comes from Khun Tan River, which forms the backbone of in Tambon Pa Tan. It is also the name of That Pa Tan, an important temple in the district.

Neighboring districts are (from the northwest clockwise) Phaya Mengrai, Chiang Khong, Wiang Kaen and Thoeng of Chiang Rai Province.

The district is subdivided into 3 communes (tambon), which are further subdivided into 55 villages (muban). Ban Ta is a township (thesaban tambon) which covers parts of tambon Ta. There are further 3 Tambon administrative organizations (TAO).
