Amphitere

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amphitere, Amphithere, or Amphiptere is a term generally applied to plumed or serpentine dragons. Varieties of this creature included both limbed and limbless breeds.

Amphiteres were reputed to possess great wisdom or knowledge, as well as some form of power as a result. Many also supposedly guarded hordes of treasure, but unlike the typical treasure horde-guarding dragon they were summoned into that position.

As is common in draconic mythology, special properties were associated with its body parts. One of these were the eyes, believed to generate hypnotic effects on anyone.

[edit] Amphitheres in "Dragonology"

In Dragonology series of young-adult fictional and educational books, Amphitheres are the only American type of dragon, having only its wings as limbs. Yet, there is only one species, but there are Northern, Central and Southern subspecimens:

  • Draco americanus tex, the Northern dragon, known as Moth-dragon or winged snake, has moth-shaped wings and a body full of fur;
  • Draco americanus mex, the Mesoamerican dragon, known as the Plumed Serpent, has feathers all over its body, associated to Quetzalcoatl;
  • Draco americanus incognito, the Southern dragon, nothing is known about this dragon due to the fact that it can camouflage in almost any environment
