Amfipoli

Amfipoli (Αμφίπολη) is a municipality in the Serres Prefecture, Macedonia, Greece, named after the ancient city Amphipolis. Its population in 2001 was 3,623. The seat of the municipality is in Palaiokomi.
The archeological site was explored in the 19th century, but excavations only began in the 1970s. The ruins attract a number of tourists to the site, as well does the yearly-held theater festival.
