This portal box is intended to honor various flags--national, state, and unit--by offering the best images residing in wikicommons. We encourage users to upload images responsibly to the commons, and make recommendations for new featured flags on this page. Like each of the four image boxes on the page, occasionally this box will be moved to the featured picture location for the month. As a general rule, I hope to alternate Union and Confederate each month. The first image is intended to honor the American flag which at one moment represented all of the people of the United States, and after the first cannon shot on April 12, 1861 suddenly represented only some of those Americans, none less brave or noble for the sudden change.
