AmericasMart

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Built by John C. Portman in 1957, AmericasMart could be considered his most inspirational project. It is a revolutionary vision of its creator which linked many buildings in the downtown Atlanta area together via “bridges”. A total of three buildings, all designed by Mr. Portman, are also connected by bridges. This vision was to make buildings in downtown (which Portman either designed, helped design, or inspired) a place where businesses could come and stay integrated, connected, and in touch with one another. ***

[edit] Concept

The concept of AmericasMart is based on the old idea of a wholesale marketplace, where buyers come to purchase product for resale. This idea had never seen the scale that AmericasMart created.

The AmericasMart consists of Building 1, known as the Merchandise Mart, Building 2, the Gift Mart, and Building 3, the Apparel Mart. Temporary vendors set up twice a year drawing retailers from all over the southeast and farther.
