American parfait

An American parfait is a dessert normally made by layering cream or ice cream or flavored gelatin dessert with other ingredients such as granola, nuts, yogurts, syrups, fresh fruit, or whipped topping. A parfait is normally made in a tall clear glass making all layers visible.

Parfait was humorously mentioned in the film Shrek, when the titular character is explaining that "ogres are like onions", because they have layers. The more optimistic character Donkey says that cake and parfait also have layers, and everybody loves them. He then goes on to say that "parfait may be the most delicious thing in the world", despite Shrek's protests that "not everybody loves ogres".
