American University of the Caribbean
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The American University of the Caribbean (AUC) is a medical school on the Dutch side of the island of Saint Martin/Sint Maarten in the Netherlands Antilles. AUC was founded on the island of Montserrat in 1978, but was forced to move to its present location by the eruption of the previously dormant Soufriere Hills volcano.
It is only one of four Caribbean medical schools that provides access for licensure to all 50 American states. The other Caribbean medical schools are St. George's University School of Medicine(SGU), Ross University School of Medicine and Saba University School of Medicine (although Saba's status is debatable due to the relative recent establishment of the institution).
The curriculum consists of an accelerated programme of 9.5 semesters in total. This roughly translates to a minimum of 38 months if all semesters are completed continuously, although this is not the norm. The first 5 semesters take place on the island of St. Maarten and the remaining 4.5 semesters are completed in teaching hospitals in the United States and/or the UK & Ireland.
