American Public Media

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

American Public Media is the brand under which Minnesota Public Radio distributes public radio programming outside of the state of Minnesota. American Public Media is responsible for distribution of Garrison Keillor's well-known weekend program A Prairie Home Companion; on weekdays, its most prominent program is Marketplace.

[edit] Historical ties to Public Radio International

Formerly, much of American Public Media's programming content was distributed by Public Radio International, which itself was named "American Public Radio" until 1 July 1994. The former name of PRI (American Public Radio) and the current branding of APM (American Public Media) are apparently unrelated, despite their similarity. APR was formed by Bill Kling to distribute A Prairie Home Companion, but it was designed as a consortium of multiple public radio stations initially KUSC Los Angeles, WNYC New York and WGBH Boston, plus Minnesota Public Radio. In contrast to PRI, which distributes a large amount of content it does not own, APM predominantly distributes content that it owns; the current exceptions are As It Happens and the BBC Proms.

Several specials are also distributed by APM on a less frequent basis, including a number of Christmas programs and the BBC Proms.
