[edit] Location
The school's primary campus is located at 121-129 Waterloo Road, Kowloon Tong, Kowloon, Hong Kong. Located a 10 minute walk from the Kowloon Tong MTR and KCR stations and bus terminus. Over the past few years, AIS has started to expand its campus by building up new campus buildings along Waterloo Road, in competition with other international schools in the area. AIS has built a new campus building in the high school area, but there are still constructions in between the high school and the middle school, in renovating the old campus used many years ago.
Due to the renovation in the campus, most physical education activities are held in Kowloon Tsai Park nearby with many sports facilities. Ball sports can be played in the public playground and tennis/squash can be played in booked courts. Annually, the Sports Day/Track and Field Day, an event ran by all school students in December, are also held in the sportsground in the park.
Not only sports activities, the school even create the Cultural Fair in November and also Middle/High school performances in February or May. In creating these external and after school activities, the school helps many students to have fun in the school. (Check the Houses section for more details)
[edit] History
In 1987, when AIS was established, AIS was known as California International School (CIS). Situated in the Kowloon Tong area, AIS became one of the oldest international schools in Hong Kong. In 2000, the school was renamed American International School. Still, for many years, the school continues its policies in teaching in the Californian system. However, there have been changes in recent years.
Due to the competition of new international schools being built around the area, AIS started to accept more students than before, expanding the school to a bigger community. Other than American teachers, there are also teachers from New Zealand, Scotland, England, India, Hong Kong, and Canada. In adapting to the American system, this school demonstrates a good opportunity for students to get into American colleges easier.
AIS is not only beginning to improve the school quality by renovating the campus, but the school is also participating in international school competitions in Kowloon and Hong Kong; playing in sports teams, such as soccer A/B/C (Boys/Girls), volleyball A/B/C (Girls), basketball A/B/C (Boys) and swimming (Boys/Girls). In recent years, AIS is especially achieving excellent results in the volleyball A/B girls teams, by dominating the schools in Hong Kong. Other than that, AIS also is participating in track and field events (Check HKSSF).
[edit] Houses
AIS had created house activities, creating rivalries in the school in competing in sports-based and academic-based activities. Every year in December, Sports Day would be held in Kowloon Tsai Park nearby, where track and field competitions were held. Before the 2003-2004 year, AIS had four houses determined by primary colors: Red, yellow, green, and blue. After that, the school starts to make house activities more significant, based on homerooms in grades, into three competitive houses with legendary animals. The three legendary animals are The Blue Dragons, The White Tigers, and The Red Phoenix.
