America's Town Meeting of the Air

America’s Town Meeting of the Air was a public affairs discussion broadcast on radio from 1935 to 1956.
It began as a 60-minute program May 30, 1935, on the Blue Network/ABC, Thursdays 9:30pm, and in 1941 continued in various time lengths and days: Thursdays 8:30pm (1942-47); Tuesdays 8:30pm (1947-49); Tuesdays 9pm (1950-54); Sundays 8pm (1955-56).
George V. Denny Jr. was the moderator for debates on a wide variety of issues before a very vocal live audience which sometimes heckled the panelists.
Guests over the years included Heywood Broun, Pearl Buck, Eddie Cantor, Irene Dunne, Will Durant, John Gunther, Langston Hughes, Julian Mason, Bill Mauldin, Eleanor Roosevelt, Carl Sandburg, Norman Thomas and Dorothy Thompson.
The series continued until July 1, 1956.
