AMD 690 chipset series
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The AMD 690 chipset series or AMD 690 series chipset by AMD is a chipset family manufactured by AMD subsidiary ATI for the AMD platform, focusing on both desktop and mobile computing markets. The 690 chipset series consists of three members: 690G, 690V and M690T. It was notable that the original "RD690" chipset was deleted in the official roadmap without official explanation.[1][2]

[edit] Naming of AMD chipsets
Since ATI was merged as a subsidiary of AMD in October, sources[3] report that the naming scheme of AMD chipset platforms have been changed, and is summarized below:
“ | According to the rule of denomination of AMD chipset, all AMD chipsets are denominated as AMD + chipset’s code + code of product segment, in which the product segment includes X(Multi GPU), T(Premium Class IGP), G(Mainstream Class IGP) and V(Value Class IGP). Under the rule, therefore, the previously denominated ATI Xpress 3200, codename RD580, now is denominated to AMD 580X CrossFire.
For mobile platform, the denomination is a little bit different; this is followed by AMD + M + chipset’s code. For example, RX690M is denominated as AMD M690. In addition, if the chipset has IGP, the brand of ATI is kept in the graphic part. For example, the next-generation AMD IGP RS690 has got the name AMD 690G Chipset with ATI Radeon X1250 Graphics. |

Therefore, under the naming scheme, the chipsets will be renamed as follows:[4]
Original codename | Segment | Prefix | Suffix | Final name |
---|---|---|---|---|
RX690 | Premium | - | T | AMD 690T Chipset |
RS690 | Mainstream | - | G | AMD 690G Chipset with ATI Radeon X1250 Graphics |
RS690C | Value | - | V | AMD 690V Chipset with ATI Radeon X1200 Graphics |
RS690T | Premium (Mobile) | M | T | AMD M690T Chipset |
RS690M | Mainstream (Mobile) | M | - | AMD M690 chipset |
RS690MC | Value (Mobile) | M | V | AMD M690V chipset |
These names refer to northbridge-southbridge sets; ATI names have been maintained as northbridge names.
[edit] Lineup
Note:Only 690G and 690V were launched in February 2007, the others are still in development.
The chipset has several variants, some of them were launched and available in the market, while some of them are still in development or planning,[4][5][6][7][8] they are summarized below, sorted by their northbridge codename.
The first one is the "RS690" which is the basic chipset and implemented now as 690G. The second one is the "RS690C" which is a simplified version of 690G and without TDMS support and named as 690V. The third one in the series id the "RS690M" for mobile platform with the fourth one is the "RS690MC", a simplified version of RS690M and without TDMS support.
Another one in the lineup is the "RS690T", another variant to the "RS690M" chipset with local frame buffer (see below). The last one is the codenamed "RX690". Some references to this chipset was noted in a leaked ATI roadmap, however not much information was available as of today.[5]
[edit] Features
[edit] General features
The 690G and 690V chipsets features an Integrated Graphics Processor (IGP in short) which is incorporated into the northbridge with Radeon X700 level on an 80 nm fabrication process. The IGP contains 4 pipelines, 2 vertex shaders capable of Shader Model 2.0 with DirectX 9 compatiblility but not compatible with DirectX 10. It uses shared system memory under UMA.
The IGP also includes AVIVO capabilities used in Radeon X1000 series, for hardware decoding of videos with recommended video playback of resolution up to 720p/1080i.
Both chipsets are fully compatible with Windows Vista Aero interface with Windows Vista Premium certified, and support up to dual channel DDR2-800 memory modules. Also supported by the chipset is the extra PCI slots and high definition 7.1 channel Realtek ALC883 audio codec or Realtek ALC888 8+2-Channel HD CODEC and Gigabit Ethernet outside of the northbridge.
The northbridge is operated with a TDP of 8 Watts[8][9] or 13.8 Watts,[10] and is pin-to-pin compatible with RS485 northbridge, the northbridge supports HyperTransport 2.0 at 1 GHz, and additional 3 PCI Express x1 slots.
The northbridge and the southbridge are connected through "ALink 2" which is a 4 lane PCI Express, providing 2 GB/s bandwidth, a double of the previous version of ALink.
The southbridge paired with the AMD 690 is the SB600 or IXP600. It is based on a 130 nm fabrication process, and provide 6 USB, 1 ATA/133 and 4 SATA 3.0 Gbit/s interfaces. It supports RAID 0, 1, and 10 across all four SATA ports (all four ports are required for RAID 10.)
There are slight differences between the supported output interfaces and the expansion slots of the two chipsets, which also varies with motherboard implementation and with chipset subtypes, and is summarized below.
[edit] 690G
For 690G, the IGP was named as "Radeon X1250" operating at 400MHz IGP clock frequency, with HDMI and dual link DVI-D output with HDCP support and TDMS support for HDMI output. The chipset also support dual VGA and DVI or DVI and HDMI output simultaneously, to achieve a maximum of three monitor output, called "SurroundView", and up to four independent displays with an additional video card.
The 690G chipset also support a maximum of 24 additional PCI Express lanes and a PCI Express x16 lanes expansion slot, and the chipset mixed audio and video signals and output through the HDMI interface.
[edit] 690V
For 690V, "Radeon X1200" was the name of the IGP, with clock frequency of 350MHz. The major differences between the 690G and 690V chipsets is that the 690V chipset lacks support for TMDS output and no HDMI output, therefore limited to VGA or LVDS output only. The chipset also lacks external PCI Express x16 graphics slot, and limited to the IGP for graphics processing.

[edit] M690T
Originally "RS690T" for mobile platform. Featuring an optional 16-bit DDR2 side-port memory with 128 MB [11] capacity as local frame buffer, as well as the incorporation the concept of dynamic switching between IGP and external graphics without reboot, letting the CPU core to have deeper sleep states [12]. Sources revealed that the RS690T chipset may pair with SB700 southbridge and named as the "trevally" platform focusing the mobile market.[13] It is worth to note that the RS690T chipset has been added to AMD "longevity programme", that is AMD comitts to supply the chipset at least five years after general availability [14]. However, currently, M690T chipset was coupled with SB600 southbridge [11].
