With the students, faculty and staff residing in side the campus, IIT Delhi is a residential campus. Since its inception the institute has place accent on providing an invigorating and creative environment, which promotes independent thinking and introspection. The students there by become aware of the consequences of their own actions. Through participation in various activities, the student extends his intellectual and aesthetic horizons far beyond the realm of the hostel and institute. The staff assisted by the students and faculty manages the hostels. Overall management of hostel is carried out according to the provisions of the Board for Hostel Management (BHM). BHM is one of the Boards constituted by the Students Affairs Council (SAC). SAC is a joint student-faculty senate committee, governed by its own constitution, which was approved by the senate of the institute.
BHM has its own constitution and it is responsible for policy formation and review of all matters relating management of the hostels. At the hostel level a House Working Committee (HWC), organizes and manages the hostel and is recognized by the BHM.
The quality of house depends on the abilities of members of HWC. The active members can change the quality of food and surroundings and overall living conditions of house. The amount of mess charges very much depends on the efforts of the mess secretary and committee. The Residents are requested to demand good quality of work from these elected members.
Another important input to the quality of life in the house is cooperation of the residents. The creative and intelligent resident can generate new ideas towards making the house a better place.
One of the fascinating features of IIT hostels is in house cybercafe called computer Room. At present there are seven Pentium PC’s which are on IIT LAN which itself is connected to high speed VSNL line. Every Araite will have special account to enjoy untiring computing. All the rooms have internet ports and students are encouraged to use their own PCs for unlimited surfing and computation. Activities leading to Cyber Crime are strictly prohibited at the IIT Campus. Students found involved in these activities will be punished severely leading to expulsion from hostel and institute.

The House Master is the head of the house, It is honorary position given to a senior professor, who helps the hostel management in important decision making. A faculty member of IIT will be the warden of house. The day to day affairs in running the house, house room allotment, conduction of election etc. are carried out in the supervision of The Warden. He or his nominee has to be contacted for many student activities of the house.
[edit] The House Staff
The Caretaker and Assistant Caretaker: They are responsible for keeping the house in good condition and implementing the rules of the house. The residents are requested to lodge all their complaints regarding house except the dining hall with them.
The Catering Supervisor and Assistant Catering Supervisor are responsible for the efficient running of the dining hall. The students are requested to follow the rules laid by the staff and report any problem related to dining hall to them.
Apart from these staff there are separate staff for the cleaning of the house and separate staff for providing services in the dining hall. Students should behave well with all the staff members and report to the Warden in case of any problem.

There are many facilities provided by the hostel:
- A common room, with subscriptions of various newspapers and magazines.
- A TV room, with a 29" TV and cable connection.
- A computer room.
- A small library (called Bookland), with both syllabus books and other books like novels.
- A Gym room, with most of the essential equipment.
- A half Basketball court.
[edit] Students' role
Students play a pivotal role in the running of the house. An elected team of Secretaries and Representatives form a House Working Committee (HWC). The House Secretary is the student leader of HWC. House Master and Warden are also members of this committee. HWC manages all the internal activities of house. The residents of the hostel elect the Secretaries and Representatives and few committee members are nominated. Important decisions about the various house activities, like purchases, hostel development policies, rules etc. are decided by HWC.
[edit] Vindhyachal House
Vindhyachal House is amongst the oldest house of residence for boys in Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. It is named after the Vindhyachal Mountain Range of India. It houses around 300 students and has a basketball court, a fully-equipped gymnasium, mess facility among other things. The hostel lies between Shivalik House and Kumaon House. It is divided into 3 zones South, East and West, which are further subdivided into 4 wings each.
Also known as Vindy, the hostel has a very unique location due to its proximity to the 24 hour operational Nescafe.

- Vindhyachal House won the BHC (Best Hostel Trophy) in 2002.
- Vindhyachal House won the BRCA Trophy in 2002.
- Vindhyachal House won the BHM Runners Up Trophy in 2003.
- Vindhyachal House won the BSP Trophy in 2005.
- Vindhyachal House won the GC (General Championship) in 2006.
- Vindhyachal House won the BHM Trophy (Board of Hostel Management) in 2006.

Aravali House is the oldest hostel on the campus committed to providing excellent facilities and a homely atmosphere for the creame of the country to pursue their academic and extra curricular interests. It gives you a sense of association with one of the country’s best educational institutions. Founded in 1963, the hostel has a very unique location due to its proximity to the canteen and stationary shops.
Aravali has 299 rooms, two thirds of which are single rooms. About 425 students can be housed at a time in all its rooms. The member of the house are known as Araite. Private Laundry facilities are available in addition to six Washing Machines and twelve Iron Boxes present in the hostel for general use. Each bath room block consists of a geyser to supply hot water. Refrigerated and purified water is available for drinking in mess.
[edit] Kumaon House
Kumaon House' is one of the eighth hostels for male students at IIT Delhi, named after the Kumaon mountain range in northern India. It is unique in shape; a four storey building. The other four being Nilgiri House, Karakoram House, Arabali House and Jwalamukhi House built in a distinct cross-shaped floor plan.

Karakoram House is one of the ten hostels for male students at IIT Delhi, named after the Karakoram peak in the Himalayas.

- Triangular pyramidal windows projecting out from rooms.
- Wall-size windows in the mess hall and other common areas.
- Portrait of the dancing couple in the mess hall.
- There are 6 wings on each floor, each having about 10-20 rooms. About half of the rooms are double rooms, and rest single rooms.

- Professor S N Maheshwari occupied Room D-12 as an undergraduate student. He served as Dean of Undergraduate Studies (-2001) a prominent figure of the IIT Delhi administration.

- Karakoram hostel was awarded best hostel championship in session 2005-2006.
- Karakoram hostel stood first in BRCA events in session 2005-2006 and thus won prestigious BRCA trophy.
- In session 2005-2006 krakoram stood first in BHM events and second in BSP events.
