"Alyssa Lies" (2006) | "Livin' Our Love Song" (2007) |
"Alyssa Lies" is a song recorded by country music artist Jason Michael Carroll. Released in late 2006, the song was the lead-off single to Carroll's album Waitin' in the Country.
[edit] Content
The song is about a young girl (the singer's daughter) who states that she has met a school friend named Alyssa, an abused child. To explain her injuries, Alyssa would lie to the teachers and classmates, so as not to implicate the culprit. The daughter explains the situation to her own father, and then asks why Alyssa lies about her situation.
The father (the singer), after hearing her pray one night for Alyssa's safety, considers reporting the abuse. However, when they get to school on Monday, it is too late; Alyssa has apparently died from her injuries ("She doesn't lie in the classroom / She doesn't lie anymore at school / Alyssa lies with Jesus / 'Cause there's nothing anyone would do"). The singer goes on to bemoan the failings of her teachers and others who could have reported the abuse, and then tells how he had to tearfully explain why Alyssa wasn't at school.
[edit] Other notes
"Alyssa Lies" was penned by Jason himself over the course of three years. He admits that he suffered migranes from writing the song.
Jason's label was originally planning to release another single as the lead-off to his album. However, when he was promoting his album at a radio station, he performed "Alyssa Lies" live, and the station received several calls regarding the song. On the radio station "93.7 The Bull", located in St. Louis, Missouri, a trucker called in, saying he had just listened to the song, and his eyes had become so filled with tears that he almost veered off the road.
