Alvíss
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alvíss ("All-Wise") was a dwarf in Norse mythology.
Thor's daughter, Þrúðr, was promised to Alvíss but Thor devised a plan to stop Alvíss from marrying his daughter. He told Alvíss that, because of his small height, he had to prove his wisdom. Alvíss agreed and Thor made the tests last until after the sun had risen--all dwarves turned to stone when exposed to sunlight, so Alvíss was petrified and Þrúðr remained unmarried.
He has a small appearance in Neil Gaiman's novel American Gods.
