Wikipedia:Alternative outlets

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Material is deleted from Wikipedia for a variety of reasons. Among them is that Wikipedia is a project whose goal is to build an encyclopedia, within a broad understanding of the word. Sometimes material is submitted that is perfectly factual and verifiable, but falls outside the scope of Wikipedia and its sister projects.

This page exists to make contributors aware of other outlets for their work, specifically Wiki-based projects that have a specific interest in articles that have been deleted by Wikipedia. It is up to contributors to familiarize themselves with the procedures and policies of these outlets and to examine their licensing arrangements, which may not be identical to Wikipedia's.

Wikimedia Foundation does not endorse these sites in any way.

Contents

[edit] Wikitravel

Wikitravel is a project which is creating a free travel guide. See Wikitravel:Cooperating with Wikipedia and Wikitravel:Welcome, Wikipedians

Note that Wikitravel is NOT GFDL. Don't copy text from Wikipedia to Wikitravel unless you have permission from the copyright holder to license the text under the Creative Commons BY-SA license. If you're not sure whether or not this is true, and you haven't created the content completely by yourself, then it probably isn't.

[edit] Wikinfo

Wikinfo is a wiki based on Wikipedia, but it allows original research, POV articles written from a sympathetic point of view, also signed articles (but not signed by anons), and short articles that are mere dictionary definitions or weblinks.

If an article is currently on Wikipedia but not Wikinfo, their modified software allows you to edit the Wikipedia article and then save it to Wikinfo.

[edit] Anarchopedia

Anarchopedia is a project that intends to create an encyclopedia/dictionary/"knowledge base". The code has been modified so that all logged-in users have sysop access and so that even anonymous users can view and restore deleted edits.

The edit history should be copied to the talk page or dumped into your edit summary if you are copying articles from Wikipedia that are soon to be or have been deleted. Any factual content written from a neutral—anarchist point of view is acceptable and will not likely be deleted or reverted.

[edit] Everything 2

Main article: Wikipedia:Guide for Everything2 noders#Moving_content_from_Wikipedia_to_E2

Everything 2 is a combination of encyclopedia articles and all other types of writing.

[edit] Other wikis

There are specialized wiki on just about every subject. Perhaps one from the List of wikis would be more appropriate.

[edit] Bad Jokes and Other Deleted Nonsense

If the content was of no serious merit, but was funny, then consider moving it to Wikipedia:Bad Jokes and Other Deleted Nonsense, or contributing to Uncyclopedia.

[edit] Setting up and running your own wiki

You can also set up and run your own wiki. Wikibooks has a Wiki Science textbook with information on doing this.
