Edited this some. Technically, most alternative currency systems are not strictly independent from a national currency--and many are strongly dependent on them. Also, not all alternative currencies are "designed"; they can also arise "naturally" under harsh economic conditions. I plan to greatly expand this article, with reference, soon. Plan to add headings on "features" of alternative currency systems, reasons for using them, categorizing them, history, etc. Cazort 18:19, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
