[edit] Magazines
Altiora is probably best known for its youth magazines which were distributed via the Catholic schools in Belgium.[2]
- 1920: Zonneland (in Dutch) / Petits Belges (in French, later Tremplin), a weekly magazine with illustrated short stories (later also comics) and documentation for 10 to 12 years old
- 1930: Vlaamse Filmpjes, a weekly, previously unpublished short fictional story of 32 pages on A5 format, intended for 12 to 14 year olds
- 1958: Zonnekind, for 6 to 8 years old
- 1963: Doremi, for 4 to 6 years old, which also appears in French, English, German, and Spanish
- 1966: Zonnestraal, for 10 to 12 years old
- 1973: Top, for 12 to 15 years old: in 1995 this becomes iD
- 1991: Dopido, for 2 to 3 years old
Other magazines, intended for families or with cultural information, were more short lived.
The magazines had many famous Belgian authors amongst its contributors, including Ernest Claes and Jijé, but the one author most associated with the magazines is probably Jean Ray, writing as "John Flanders".
[edit] Books
Altiora has two major ranges of books, youth publications and religious publications.
[edit] Comics
Altiora was one of the first publishers to bring comics in their magazines, and has printed many unpublished comics over the years. However, contrary to other publishers with more purely comic magazines like Dupuis (with Spirou) and Le Lombard (with Tintin), they had little success with the edition of comic albums, and produced only a limited number of those. The most successful was Rikske en Fikske by Gray, a juvenile series about a boy and his dog. Other series by authors like Jijé, Renaat Demoen, François Craenhals or Berck were more shortlived or limited to a single story. Altiora hasn't published any comics since the 1970s.
[edit] Multimedia
In recent years, the company has branched out into multimedia publications, amongst others with their website KidCity.
