Altenstadt
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Altenstadt is the name of a small village within the canton of Wissembourg in the Alsace region of France near the Franco-German Border.
Altenstadt is also the name of four towns in Germany:
- Altenstadt in the Wetterau district, see Altenstadt, Hesse
- Altenstadt in the district Neu-Ulm, Bavaria, see Altenstadt (Iller)
- Altenstadt in the district Weilheim-Schongau, Bavaria, see Altenstadt (Schongau)
- Altenstadt in the district Neustadt (Waldnaab), Bavaria, see Altenstadt (Waldnaab)
While there are four towns with the name Altenstadt currently in existence, it may be useful to know that historically there was a fifth. Near the city of Hof, close to the Czech border, there is a sister city called Gattendorf. Part of the municipality of Gattendorf is Kirchgattendorf. There are some interesting ruins at Kirchgattendorf, consisting of the remains of several castles of the late Middle Ages which comprised the territory of the barons von Altenstadt. Sometimes in historical reference the place name "Altenstadt" will refer to this fifth Altenstadt, which no longer exists except as a collection of ruins at Kirchgattendorf.
