Alt Eisen is a fictional giant robot from the Japanese video game series Super Robot Wars. It has appeared in the Super Robot Wars Compact 2 Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and the game that compiles these three, Super Robot Wars Impact. Its most recent appearance was in the SRW Original Generation series.

[edit] Appearance

At first glance, the Alt Eisen is an unwieldy, awkward looking machine. Its huge head and shoulder launchers make it a very top-heavy machine. Its legs, which house large verniers, are also very bulky.

The whole machine is painted rust-red with gray and white highlights in its torso area.

[edit] Technical and historical

The ATX Project was a new project set up to build new Personal Troopers that would prove to be the next generation high-spec weapons. The Alt Eisen's origin varies but it has always had the same purpose. In the Compact games/Impact, the Alt Eisen was originally the Gespenst Mark III, which was meant to be the successor to the previous Gespenst machines. In the Original Generation games, the Alt Eisen is created and designed by Dr. Marion Radom, a former Mao Industries scientist, but instead works under the Tesla Liecht Institute. This new unit, which was suppose to become the "Gespenst Mark III", was based off of the PTX-003 Gespenst Type T, since that would serve as a worthy base for the bid for the next generation mobile machine, which was in competition with Mao Industries' Huckebein. This unit was to carry powerful weapons and to carry only solid weapons. Unforeseen complications arose in the completion of the unit, however - it was heavily unbalanced and could not be utilized easily by standard pilots. Another issue was very high production cost. The only existing unit would be codenamed the PTX-003C "Alt Eisen" (literally "Old Iron" in German, but "Alt Eisen" is also the german word for "scrap metal").

The single Alt Eisen would go to ATX Team member Kyosuke Nanbu, a very skilled pilot who was able to handle the machine with enough finesse so that its imbalancing issues were of no matter. Kyosuke makes use of the fact that the Alt Eisen is a heavy armored robot and tanks in combat in a way that he takes minimal damage when hit. He utilizes the Alt Eisen's purpose as a heavily armed mecha with enough sheer firepower to break through enemy lines well. Another ATX Project development, the Weiss Ritter, would be piloted by Kyosuke's girlfriend Excellen Browning and serve as Alt Eisen's partner unit. Together, they can perform the combination attack "Rampage Ghost".

The Alt Eisen would serve as Kyosuke's main unit for the events in Original Generation. In Original Generation 2, when it's heavily damaged in combat against Axel Almer's Soulgain, it is decided that this unit should be upgraded into the Alt Eisen Riese (Old Iron Giant in German).

In the alternatve Shadow Mirror dimension, the Kyosuke Nanbu of that universe uses an Alteisen colored in blue rather than red. This is known as the Alt Eisen Nacht, ("Old Iron Night" in German) although it is officially referred to as the Gespenst MK III by the Shadow-Mirror themselves. While the unit itself never appears outside of OG2's map, unused sprite data exists depicting a blue Alt Eisen.

[edit] Specifications

Height: 22.2 meters

Weight: 85.4 tons

Weapon Systems:

  • Autocannon
The Alt Eisen fires the three-barrel machine cannons on its left arm.
  • Heat Horn
A superheated metal blade mounted on the Alt Eisen's forehead. This weapon is usually swung in a slashing motion.
  • Revolver Stake
A large reinforced metal spike built into the Alt Eisen's right forearm. After being stabbed into the enemy, the Revolver Stake is driven even deeper by a high-explosive charge. The result is a crippling, crushing blow that is often deadly to low-end Personal Troopers and Armored Modules. The high-explosive charges are stored in a 6-slot revolving cylinder that is not unlike those seen in revolvers.
  • Heavy Claymore
The large, box-like compartments on the Alt Eisen's shoulders can be described as "shrapnel launchers". When in use, the compartments open up and unleash a hail of high-velocity solid titanium ball bearings---the effect is similar to a cross between the M18A1 Claymore mine, which the weapon was named after, and the Metal Storm system. While the Heavy Claymore can only be used at short range, the effect is devastating.
  • "Trump Card"
Kyosuke's signature attack. "Trump Card" is not a weapon in itself, but rather a precision-timed serial use of the Alt Eisen's weapons. While the animation of this attack has changed from game to game, it generally begins with the Heavy Claymore and ends with the repeated firing of the Revolver Stake, driving the deadly spike into the enemy as if by a jackhammer and emptying the entire chamber.
  • Rampage Ghost
Kyosuke and Excellen's signature combination attack. There are different attack animations, depending on the game:
    • In Original Generation, the Alt rushes in first, while the Weiss Ritter fires its Beam Cannon attack. A successful hit allows the Alt to deliver its Heat Horn attack, followed by a returning attack of the Weiss' Oxtongue Rifle E at point-blank range. To end it off, the Alt uses its Revolver Stake, while the Weiss stabs the enemy with its Plasma Cutter simultaneously, ending the combination attack.
    • In Original Generation 2, the attack animation is the same as Original Generation's, albeit the Weiss using its Oxtongue Rifle B attack instead of its Plasma Cutter at point-blank range.
