[edit] Battery

Altairnano claims to have developed new electrode materials for an environmentally safe battery (NanoSafe) with a one-minute recharge and:

  • Innovative technology
  • Green battery design
  • Large configuration choices
  • No operational safety issues
  • Three times the power of existing batteries
  • High cycle life—10,000 to 15,000 charges vs. 750 for existing batteries
  • The capability to operate in extreme temperatures: -22° to 480° Fahrenheit
  • Low life-cycle costs
  • Four times longer battery life (est. 20+ years)

An electrode made with nanomaterials does not react with the electrolytes used in most lithium ion systems. No reaction means that no Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) barrier is formed around the electrode, making it easier for lithium ions to reach the surface of the electrode. And, with a nano-structured component, there is more surface area available to the ions—up to 100 times more surface area than with conventional, graphite electrodes.

The nanomaterials facilitate access to the active sites required for battery operation. What’s more, the small size of the materials dramatically reduces the distance from the surface to the sites—all of which helps accelerate recharging and discharging.

[edit] Battery electric vehicle using NanoSafe

Battery electric vehicles using NanoSafe are Zero emission vehicles. The battery pack resides under the vehicle.

Employing 28 Modules (35kWh @ 386V), they can achieve a 218 kilometer (136 mile) range with less than a 10 minute recharge time.

In January 2007, Altairnano acquired a 16% stake in Phoenix Motorcars in exchange for a 3-year exclusive agreement to provide their batteries for use in 4-wheeled vehicles. Altairnano will provide up to 500 battery packs in 2007.[1]
