Altaf Gauhar

Altaf Gauhar (Urdu: الطاف گوہر) (b. 1923 - d. 2000), was a civil servant, journalist, and writer from Pakistan. During his civil service career he was close to Ayub Khan as Pakistan's Information Secretary, and wrote his biography, Ayub Khan : Pakistan's First Military Ruler. In 1969 he became editor of Dawn where he had differences with Bhutto, who was chief martial law administrator, and who twice put Altaf in prison. Altaf in prison became deeply absorbed in Islam and made several translations of Quran. In 1978 based In London, he launched Third World Foundation and its Third World Quarterly, a monthly South and also co-edited the Third World Review. He wrote books on political matters. Altaf Gauhar was born in Gujranwala and he died of cancer.
