[edit] North American Area Codes

I approve of what you have done to . I had done a little tidying there and you have continued the good work.

Do you think that List of North American area codes and List of California area codes should move to 'Level 0' of ?

I am currently fuming at the way the Americans have created lots of articles Area code xxx. As if the rest of the world did not have area codes (and as if there were no area codes for purposes other than telephony). Even though you and I (I suspect you are Indian) would both tend to call them STD codes.
But I am inclined to let that pass - I have no intention of creating 800 or so articles about UK area codes.

If you reply, please do so on my talk page - top, bottom, middle as you wish. I have your page on my watch list but it's not so easy to see that what you were donig - unless of course you put something like 'for RHaworth' in the Edit summary. -- RHaworth 00:20, 2005 Jan 13 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Named passenger trains vs. Category:Amtrak passenger trains

Hi. I noticed you've recategorized the articles that include Amtrak train details into Category:Amtrak passenger trains. The only potential problem is that many of Amtrak's train names were used long before Amtrak existed (i.e. California Zephyr and Empire Builder). The information on the historic trains doesn't necessarily belong in a category devoted entirely to Amtrak operations. Do you propose splitting these articles into articles for each of the historic periods (i.e. Empire Builder (Great Northern) and Empire Builder (Amtrak))? What about trains that operated jointly over several railroads like the California Zephyr (which was a joint venture of the Western Pacific Railroad, Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad)? Or, do we create categories for every railroad's passenger trains like Category:Western Pacific Railroad passenger trains and Category:Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad passenger trains and then use multiple categories for articles like these two?

Your thoughts? slambo 18:51, Nov 19, 2004 (UTC)

If that's the case, I would go for renaming the Amtrak passenger trains to United States Named Passenger Trains. Alren 21:03, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)
But then what about the trains that cross the Canadian border, like Maple Leaf? It travels between New York, NY and Toronto, ON. Shall we do Category:Named passenger trains of the United States and Category:Named passenger trains of Canada? Frankly, this solution is more appealing to me as we're already doing something similar with Category:Railway companies of the United States and Category:Railway companies of Canada. slambo 21:38, Nov 19, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Mumbai Station Templates: Double Categorization Problem

[edit] Mumbai Stations Western Railway Template

 • Thanks for creating the wonderful Mumbai Suburban Railway template. It's great! I have removed the "{} is a suburb of Mumbai" because many stations aren't suburbs (for eg. Churchgate). utcursch 11:19, Oct 8, 2004 (UTC)

Alren - I saw your copyright question on the administrators talk page. [edit] Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

This is with regard to Subash Chandra Bose. I've set up a straw poll on the talk page. Please vote! Also, please remove biographical entries from the categor:History of India. Happy New Year to you too. I'm not really active these days, though I do make a few edits daily. Hi, there. I see that you have contributed to a large number of articles on Gujarat. Though I am not a Gujarati by birth, I have been born and brought up in Vadodara. So Gujarat occupies a special place in my heart.

I had tried editing the Gujarati people page several times. But each time, my edits were reverted.

I also think that the page needs a lot more content than it has at the moment.

I would earnestly request you to do something about this page. Regards. Rajatjghai 20:51, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

 • Cartography Department (Shortcut:WP:INMAP): The Department of Cartography within the WikiProject India is a group of wikipedians who work on providing quality maps related to India. Their contributions gain more significance as we try to provide more information on places, districts and states of India. As a thumb rule, maps serve better if they are in SVG format. The location maps by the cartography department has helped us include location information based on latitudes and longitudes for a give place within India. The Indian Roadways map is a featured image, one amongst the few best road maps in the world. Still, there is more work to be done. There are 604 districts in India (see List of districts of India), and each district page needs a map of that district. You can help too. Contact the Cartography Department to learn how you can help in making the best maps in Wikipedia to be India-related!

[edit] WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume I, Issue 3 - December 2006

Project News
 • Name change of cities in Karnataka: A straw poll was conducted on the proposal to change the name of cities in Karnataka, per the Nov 1, 2006 decision by the Karnataka government to rename them from the current anglicised forms. The result of the poll was to change the names. As controversial as the decision may be in the real world, the article Bangalore in Wikipedia still reflects the old name. You may be interested in knowing why. Dig the archives.
 • New Project Noticeboard (Shortcut:WP:INB): WikiProject India now sports a new colourful centralised noticeboard. An effort to make the noticeboard current and dynamic was mooted a few days back, and Ganeshk came up with the new format. The new noticeboard will strive to be the one-stop shop for all project related information. The shortcut is WP:INB.
 • Members List: The old members list is being phased out to give way for the new members list. New members are requested to add their names to the new members list. As the newsletter grows, further issues of the Project Newsletter will be delivered to those enlisted in the new list. So dash down now, to check if ur name is in there.

 • Welcome to the December 2006 edition of our newsletter. Time flies past like matter into the black hole. It is interesting to notice that we are already into the last month for the year of 2006. 2006 saw discussions and development beyond realisation. In the world of Wikipedia where quality counts than quantity, we have come a long way. We've made better than 'nothing', to say the least, and even that is an achievement. I take this opportunity to thank everyone including those who have dotted the i's and crossed the t's.

 • How to?: The "how to" part of assessment is very simple. Just head on to the talk page of any India related page and you'll find the WP India template. Simply classify the article based on the content and the criteria mentioned here. You can find the detailed instructions here. If you think it may qualify for GA/FA status, first consider submitting the article for peer review.

Project News
 • Project tagging:After a brief edit war over the addition of WP India to ancient archaeological sites now located in Pakistan, a "pre" parameter was introduced to remove the ROI flag from the template for pre-1947 articles, following discussion. After another large discussion on ANI alleging that the automated tagging by Ganeshbot and LostBot was "nationalistic", Ganeshbot was briefly blocked. Currently, the bots are again in action.
 • Swastika on Hinduism templates:Recently, an extremely large and at times emotional debate broke out regarding the use of the swastika on Hinduism templates, given its association with Nazism. As a result, Hindu Links now contains an educational message about the use of the swastika, as discussion on a more permanent resolution continues.
