[edit] Welcome!

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia!

Here are some tips to help you get started:

Good luck!

Meelar (talk)

P.S. One last helpful hint. To sign your posts like I did above (on talk pages, for example) use the '~' symbol. To insert just your name, type ~~~ (3 tildes), or, to insert your name and timestamp, use ~~~~ (4 tildes).

[edit] Welcome to another Southern Hemisphere gamer

You voted for Murray River, this week's Australian Collaboration of the week. Please come and help it become a featured-standard article. Thanks.

[edit] Kents Hill School

Hi Alphax. The article on Kents Hill School has been refactored and expanded, with additional work underway. I think that the fact it is one of the oldest co-ed schools in the nation sets a good case for notability. In any case, I was hoping you would revisit the issue and reconsider your vote. Thank you -- GRider\talk 19:57, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Anon welcome

Thanks for the tip about {{anon}}. I'm learning as much as I can, and I sometimes make mistakes. If you see me do something like that again, please let me know on my talk page. I appreciate your help. --Viriditas | Talk 05:09, 22 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Heya, what do you mean by "Don't feed the trolls" on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/National Independents Movement? --fvw* 05:42, 2004 Dec 22 (UTC)

[edit] Anons on VfD

I get very annoyed when I see anons on VfD - if you really want to keep us honest, you could become an admin, and you can't as an anon.

Strongly disagree. Admins keep you honest by authority, or alternatively by being shining beacons of virtue. I plan on doing it by subversion. :-) Seriously, though, if you don't like me being on VfD, just ignore what I say, or encourage others to ignore me. As far as content goes, there would be no difference between "SamTheAnon" (or whatever) and my current account. Stop intuitively distrusting anonymous contributions — or else just be diligent enough to read every input on the VfD votes you're interested in. I promise to always use edit summaries for anything; that should be distinguishing enough. Don't tell me little ol' me is overloading your watchlist.

If it helps: I don't plan on being on VfD very often. And I certainly won't pretend I can nominate articles or vote. 82.92.119.11 09:10, 22 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] "Bandcruft"

Interetsing theory. I don't really see a common thread with these band vanity articles like I've seen with the B-Movie Bandit. Thankfully, that clown has become a non-issue. Personally, I think it's pure vanity from individual garage band mavens who discover the site and are overwhelmed with the idea of their little clique geting mentioned on an Internet-wide encyclopedia. Thinking of taking a brief wikivacation in the meantime. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and all that good stuff. - Lucky 6.9 17:53, 22 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Needed cleanup on article Monochrom

Hi, you wrote in your vfd statement that a lot of Cleanup needs to be done on the Monochrom page - if you could give some pointers on what you think should be changed, I'd be glad to rework the site. --Verres 23:30, 22 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks for the message. I've been on the wiki awhile (too long) and I usually use the welcome template for users and anons alike. I use the anon template mostly for anons whom, upon reviewing their edit history it seems they are dedicated to the project and understand how it works mostly.

The logic was that its better to have anons be anons if they just want to cause trouble or aren't going to be very productive as policy towards them is conducted differently. That and I usually do a few welcomes at a time and enjoy c+ping :)

Anyway I think you're right and plan to do that from now on. Thanks again >:) Arminius on Vacation 09:22, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the message. I'm a bit surprised, though, because I (like most people I suppose) copied my template from that used by others, and just altered and added bits — not including the tildes. Is it a particular browser that causes the problem? Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 09:18, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Copyright info for Image:Graffitiforvandalismarticle.jpg

Hi there, you uploaded this and said you had obtained permission for it. Can you add an image copyright tag? Thanks, Alphax τεχ 04:57, Mar 26, 2005 (UTC)

Whoops...ignore that last post. I'm looking through all these copyright tags and they're a bit confusing. Which one would I use if I e-mailed the owner of the image and he gave his permission as long as the image was credited to the site? --TheGrza 17:22, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)
Er, I'd email them again and get them to release it under the Creative Commons By Attribution 2.0 license; if not, then tag it as CopyrightedFreeUseProvidedThat the website is credited. Alphax τεχ 08:39, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome to SGCommand!

Hi! Welcome to the SGCommand (Stargate) Wikicity! Looking forward to your contributions. --CocoaZen 05:17, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC) (prefer responses at Wikicities:User_talk:CocoaZen)

Yes, I've wondered about the image use as well, but since I don't really don't have a full understanding of the copyright issues involved and don't know where the images came from, I'm not changing them. (Personally, I prefer not using as many images anyway. Unless they convey important information or add significantly to the site, large images just slow down the network. But, I'm trying not to impose my personal preferences on others.)
That wikicity isn't very busy yet, so I noticed your change. --CocoaZen 07:13, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the welcome to wikipedia! And for the links regarding copyrights. -- CocoaZen 22:15, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Yes, you're probably right about the templates. Some could be imported; others created. But remember, all the rules for Wikipedia don't apply to Wikicities:.

Also, when you get a chance, could you please respond to my questions about the category Stargate Atlantis? Thanks!

[edit] Template sigs (refresh - reply →)

I know using templates for signatures is bad, but what can be done about those that already exist? Alphax τεχ 15:04, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I used to have a template sig, and when I discovered that (and why) it wasn't a good idea, I did a search'n'replace on the popular pages I haunt (VP, helpdesk etc). I did my own talk page, but not others' (figuring they wouldn't welcome a "you have new messages" just for that). Frankly, you could just search for {{templatename|Alphax}} or whatever, and just change it to {{subst:templatename|Alphax}}. -- John Fader (talk | contribs) 15:26, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Hrm... I've been doing this a bit since I discovered why they were bad, using Special:Whatlinkshere, and it seems like as good a time as any to refresh the {{anon}} tags on IP talk pages. (Oh, and I don't trust nowiki tags for braces, hashes or tildes. Too many bad experiences.) Alphax τεχ 16:47, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Using templates as signatures (reply →)

I noticed that your signature is (or was) {{User:Brian0918/sig}}, which, according to Wikipedia:Sign your posts on talk pages#Things to avoid, is bad. I used to do this too, and I am currently trying to remove (by substitution) as many as possible. Apologies if you have already changed your signature. Please reply by editing this section. [edit] Template:Edit summary (reply →)

There has existed for a long while now Template:summary, and now there's Template:editsummarynew as well. Do we really need all of them? Reply to thread by editing this section. Oh, and your Talk page is 40kb long. Thanks, Alphax τεχ 14:22, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

From my experience with Template:Edit summary, Template:Summary would be ill recieved and is arguably not supported by policy. Hyacinth 20:05, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Funny thing is, Template:Summary reads exactly like Wikipedia:Edit summary, but I agree that it's a bit strong. What do think of it now? Alphax τεχ 01:09, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Really "exactly like"? One said, "please remember edit summaries". The other said, "Use an edit summary or you will be reverted as a vandal!" Hyacinth 20:02, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Ok, the first paragraphs (as they stand) are the same. Have you Template:summary? You might be reverted. Alphax τεχ 08:55, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Well, after all this, all I can say is: I wish that some of the stuff in User:ABCD/monobook.js was standard. I'm using it, and the edit summary warning is quite cool. Alphax τεχ 09:38, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Disambiguation pages (sticky)

I noticed that you've done some disambiguation on [[British]] and others. I've been trying to do this as well. Any possibility of starting a project to do it? You can reply to this section. Thanks, Alphax τεχ 09:47, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

How would you envisage this working? Rich Farmbrough 11:24, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Ok, people check Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links (and the more updated one) and Category:Disambiguation for things to disambiguate. Where there is a clear alternative for a link target (eg. United States vs. America), it is inserted; where there is not, it is discussed. I realise the difficulty in maintaining such a thing, but ultimately, links to disambiguation pages lead to 2 pages being loaded per link followed - increasing server load and slowing down Wikipedia. Alphax τεχ 09:18, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Perhaps we need a Wikipedia:Disambiguation queries page. OTOh the people who are best placed to decide will be the regular editors of the page, if any. Rich Farmbrough 13:37, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)
The hardest part is determining which disambiguation pages have the most incoming links - best determined by database dumps. In some disambiguation cases it's difficult to decide which alternative is best suited, so we need language & grammer experts working this (I'm neither). I wonder if we should post an expression of interest to the Village Pump or mailing list... Alphax τεχ 15:56, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I'm statting the diambiguation links from a database dump. Rich Farmbrough 19:35, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Cool! Where will you put them? Alphax τεχ 04:14, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Offline reports/This is one of the most linked to disambiguation pages Note that these sub-pages don't seem to update the main page unless it's edited. This could be due to using the Paris caches. Same could apply to the "You have new messages" Rich Farmbrough 10:14, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Have you seen Template:Purge? Or my monobook.js and monobook.css (copied from ABCD's? Anyway, good to see the list updated again. How often will the script be run? Alphax τεχ 12:37, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)
It takes a few minutes of user time to do it, so whenever I notice the databse has been updated I will run it. Rich Farmbrough 16:47, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Images from nuvola (→ reply)

Hi CWS, I'm talking about Image:Important.png, Image:File important.png, Image:Xmag.png, and Image:Knewsticker.png - I've just downloaded the package from iconking.com, read the license, read the About/FAQ pages, and I haven't found anything saying they are cc-by-2.0 - the only thing I have found is that they are LGPL. Can you find out where it says they are CC? Thanks, Alphax τεχ 16:34, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • Hello, Alphax. The Legal Issues states that he licenses with both the LGPL and CC Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.0. I could have sworn that he used the latter in that package, but I must have been thinking of another package that I downloaded from the site: looking agian it appears that the icons are solely licensed under the LGPL. I'll update the images license tags immediately. – ClockworkSoul 20:29, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)
    • No worries - I was worried that they would have to be removed (I like your boxes - colour is negotiable). I'm wondering if the entire lot could be uploaded to Commons - if so, which versions of them? Thanks anyway, Alphax τεχ 05:38, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
      • Heya, Alphax. :) I'm glad that you like the boxes. Fortunately, the colors are to be chosen last: the initial selections are style and then wording ;). As for introducing the library to Commons, does Commons accept LGPL-licensed images? If it does, then I say go for it, and recommend the 64x64 version (large enough to be sizable without taking up too much room). – ClockworkSoul 12:41, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
        • Commons has LGPL images, so I'd say yes. I'll create a Commons:nuvola page to put them on. Alphax τεχ 12:50, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Root mean square functions

What are the RMS functions for various waveforms as a function of the amplitudes? Eg. RMS of a sine wave is \sqrt2 of the amplitude. Alphax τεχ 08:40, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Well, two things first: the RMS value of a sine wave is \frac1\sqrt2 of the amplitude. Also note that "the" RMS value of a waveform depends on where it's centered — for the following I've assumed that the mean value of the wave is 0 (as is usually the case in this context). Using the continuous function formula at RMS, I get
  • sawtooth (f(x) = x on [-T/2,T/2] and f(x + T) = f(x)): \frac1\sqrt3 times the amplitude
  • triangle (f(x)=T/4-\left|x\right| on [-T/2,T/2] and f(x + T) = f(x)): also \frac1\sqrt3
  • square (f(x)=\operatorname{sgn}\ x on [-T/2,T/2] and f(x + T) = f(x)): 1 (since its value is always \pm1 times the amplitude
Those are the standard waveforms I know about -- if you want more you'll have to specify them! --Tardis 02:09, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Thankyou! I knew square, and I figured sawtooth and triangle would be the same. (How much of this can be added to the RMS article?) Many thanks, Alphax τεχ 02:56, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Yon Sig (Reply)

Well, there's really no consensus that this is bad (as indicated on the WP page) but I'll change it anyways. It's just that the sig looks really long in the "edit this page" view due to all of the HTML tags. But, I don't want to be a drag on our precious servers, and make the pages load even sloooower. Cheers, Bratschetalk random 20:35, Apr 26, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] A certain user... (reply →)

... who doesn't need to be mentioned by name, thinks that you are abusing policy. I'm attempting to remain neutral here, but could you please not do things like revert them, when this only adds to the grievance? Hoping this can all be sorted out soon, Alphax τεχ 11:53, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I disagree – that person should be named as I have no idea what you're going on about. violet/riga (t) 12:04, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)
John Bradley aka. User:Irate. Anyway, reverting him while he thinks that you are engaging in personal attacks isn't helpful. I'm trying to sort through some things with him via the mailing list, so if anyone dislikes what is being said they'll have hard evidence. Alphax τεχ 13:49, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)
What reverts did you have in mind Alphax? For example, the revert by Violetriga to Grand National (mentioned by Bradley on the mailing list) was enforcing a temporary injunction by the ArbCom (during his case, the ArbCom ruled that he could only edit his own User pages and the arbitration case). You also say "if anyone dislikes what is being said, they'll have hard evidence." I presume you have seen the Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Irate/Evidence page? What we don't need is more evidence of this user's bad behaviour. What we do need is for this user is to stop behaving badly (or, less preferably, to leave Wikipedia permanently). —— Matt Crypto 14:01, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Yes, that one; regardless, it could be perceived that a conflict of interest exists. I've seen the evidence page; if anyone dislikes what I say, you'll have evidence. I'm just trying to keep myself accountable - that's part of the reason why I'm using the mailing list, not a WP page or private email. Anyway, from the latest things on the maling list, we might be getting somewhere. Alphax τεχ 14:21, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)
OK, I wish you success with your discussions with Irate, but I'm afraid I'm pessimistic about your chances :( Regarding accountability, OK, seems I misunderstood you. (Wikipedia also has accountability because it's public and has a history function). Regarding conflict of interest, the ArbCom ruling was pretty clear: Irate cannot reasonably complain about an admin reverting him for violating an ArbCom injunction, regardless of who that admin is. Irate's April 17th spree of edits seemed to be a last minute attempt to get his edits in before the ArbCom banned him -- as they indeed did 8 hours later. — Matt Crypto 14:39, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)
As Matt says he was in violation of his injunction and that was a series of reverts I did on him which were part of his ongoing argument with an anon. I agreed with the anon's edits and reinstated them – I was actually defending that (non-)user from Irate. I can't really revert anything he does now anyway – he's not going to be editing for a while! While I agree that you should try to steer clear of any users with whom you have ongoing problems with, but it was not appropriate for him to continue an edit war while banned from editing. violet/riga (t) 18:34, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Guess I should have checked the timestamps more carefully :( Oh well, looks like things are working themselves out. Sorry for bothering you, Alphax τεχ 10:45, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Not a problem at all. :) violet/riga (t) 10:57, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Your sig (reply →)

OK, your sig was {{User:SebastianHelm/sig}}. This had in turn {{User:SebastianHelm/sig0}} and {{User:SebastianHelm/sig0t}} in it. Three templates for 1 sig! Big big server load. The markup it produces is Sebastian (T) with small gray text following. Now copy that into your signature (minus the small gray text, which could be page breaking if not closed). HTH, Alphax τεχ 14:16, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Also, for the coloured stuff: "ff0000" == "#f00", "ff8800" == "#f80" etc. Since your colours are all in the form "aabbcc", you can replace them with "#abc". Alphax τεχ 14:28, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)
  • "#abc": Not really. See Wikipedia:Help_desk/Archive_17#Background_Colours_in_Tables
Ah, ok then. If only this allowed bbcode it would be small indeed. [c=#ff00cc]Wooo![/c]
  • This template on which we're writing: It's really a neat idea – i always found the situation unsatisfactory that you never know on whose talk page a talk takes place. But are you aware of the irony? You just added a big (and growing), variable, multi-level template to two talk pages in order to convince me that i shouldn't add smaller, constant, 2-level templates to talk pages.
I've currently got one placed on 3 people's talk pages (I started talking with someone, and another person joined the discussion). But the thing is, this will only be included in a few pages, which a sig template could be included in hundreds of Talk:, User_talk: and Wikipedia: namespace pages. It's like Votes for Deletion - many many subpages.
  • "HTH": I believe that you sincerely wanted to help somehow, but i'm afraid i don't see anything helpful in that paragraph. My question was not "How is my template constructed". I constructed my template myself – so i don't need you to tell me the gory details. My question was: "Can anyone provide some numbers?" By "numbers", i did not mean how often you say "big". If you have any information that would allow me and others a sober assessment, please post it under templates in sigs. Thanks, Sebastian (talk) 05:40, 2005 Apr 28 (UTC)
Sorry, don't know the actual resource drain; I believe it would be a (few?) extra SQL queries per page the sig was placed on. You could keep your old sig by just copying the wikitext, and using a raw signature (which I guess you were doing anyway). Anyway, back to other things. Alphax τεχ 06:04, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I haven't tried linking in MSYS, but in Cygwin, the file will appear to have been copied - but in reality, it hasn't; the created file works just like a symlink should and there's no difference in available space (according to df). --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 22:45, 2 May 2005 (UTC)

I opened it up in Windows Explorer and the files/folders had been copied. Anyway, now that I can get fstab to work, it's not too bad. If only I could get Vim 6.3 to work natively in MSYS (currently it runs in a DOS window, called from a shell script in /bin/). Actually, quite a few Windows command line programs don't work properly in MSYS. Oh well. Thanks anyway, Alphax τεχ 05:10, 4 May 2005 (UTC)
