The Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity is the exclusive College of Law fraternity in the University of the Philippines.
To this date, the Alpha Phi Beta remains to be a law-based fraternity. It has no chapters outside the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. Its present roster of Lords hails from the College of Law and from pre-law colleges.
The Alpha Phi Beta is essentially a political fraternity. It has endeavored to maintain its hegemony over campus affairs in line with its pillars of Academics, Leadership and Nationalism, Journalism and Literature, and Forensics and Debate.
[edit] History
Originally conceived as an organization called the "Association of Philippine Barristers" in October 1939, the Founding Brothers used it as a vehicle to confront the growing threat of a dictatorship when then Philippine President Manuel Quezon declared the creation of a "one-party" government.
In November 1939, the Founding Brothers adopted the Greek letters A Φ B equivalent to the organization's initials. Founding Brother and respected nationalist-historian Renato Constantino wrote the Fraternity Motto "We shall not be saved without Wisdom, for Knowledge is Power, but only Wisdom is Liberty."
