Alpha Capricorni

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alpha Capricorni (α Cap / α Capricorni) is an optical double star in the constellation Capricornus. It also has the traditional names Algiedi, Al Giedi, Algedi or Giedi; however, Giedi is sometimes also associated with β Capricorni.

The name Algedi is derived from the Arabic word الجديّ al-jadiyy, meaning "the billy goat" or "kid," and also refers to the entire constellation of Capricornus. It is known as 牛宿二 (the Second Star of the Ox) in Chinese.

The designation is shared by two unassociated star systems, in the constellation Capricornus:

They are separated by 0.11° on the sky, and resolvable with the naked eye, similar to Mizar and Alcor.
