[edit] Buckingham Palace
Welcome and thankyou! I was waiting for the cavalry to arrive, I don't know what possessed me to leave architecture and delve into British court ceremonial and the wonderful world of interiors. I could be left exposed as a fraud here! Giano 13:26, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)
PS How long before F4J are exposed and consigned to the bin? Poor old Eleanor Roosevelt has gone, and I suspect the lunatic who wanted to marry Princess Anne may shortly follow her, not to mention the luxurious lavatory (and we know what that means - don't we?)! Giano 13:30, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC) Hell! Thanks for the retrieval. Did I do that? How? God knows! Giano 21:45, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Rastafari
Under what grounds did you (a) pull the debate on the name change after only 4 days, and (b) under what grounds did you decide there was no consensus to move the name of the article. I make it 4 yeses and 1 no, please explain your actions and your ignoring of the consensus, ideally on the talk page.-Also Rastafari needs removing as a disambiguation, with Ras Tafari redirected to Haile Selassie, there has been no-one denying that. I am very unhappy with what you have done, so please do not ignore this message. --SqueakBox 16:15, Feb 18, 2005 (UTC) I apologize for the outrageous power tripping comment. It was wrong of me. Either remove or keep it in the discussion as you wish. SqueakBox 17:55, Feb 18, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Church in Wales
I saw the argument made that _any_ alteration of Parliament's powers or composition made under the 1911 Act would be invalid - which I would suppose include abolishing the right for Welsh bishops to sit in the Lords. Morwen - Talk 22:15, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Rastafari
BTW, I looked around, both at academic publications (theses and dissertations) and at Google and it seems that Rastafari is more widely used than Rastafarianism, with Rastafarians as the people. (see Talk:Rastafarianism#Looking_at_the_data). Thanks Guettarda 01:30, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)
I started off with the opinion that Rastafarianism probably was the more common usage, but that Rastafari was more appropriate. Looking into things I am convinced that Rastafari is the more common usage. I realise a lot of people disagree, which is fine, I don't have that much invested in it either way, although of course coming from the Caribbean I am far from disinterested. Unless/until I can find something more convincing I intend to back away from the issue. One way or the other, the best usage will work itself out if people are interested enough; that belief is why I put the effort into Wikipedia - well, that and my desire to make Trinidad the best documented country in Wikipedia ;) Guettarda 16:09, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] You have no further comment?
I have tried to make clear that I regard your introduction of comprehensive table formatting as constituting the absolute destruction of the Supercentenarian article and that without changing my operating environment it is virtually impossible to work with.If a similar catastrophe befell the College of Cardinals article I'd have to give up there too.But you have no further comment despite the intensity of my preference for bullet-pointed-lists?--Louis E./le@put.com/12.144.5.2 02:08, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Tweaks
Yes, of course, edits are always welcome if you see something I missed. I try to get articles relatively complete before publishing, but I'm not going to pretend that they're perfectly polished. Just please don't keep calling it the Sinpost, people will start thinking it's something like the pillory. --Michael Snow 16:27, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)
[edit] United Kingdom Corporation Tax
Probably testing my luck here:) However, I should be grateful if you would still have a look at this - particularly as now I'm gonna have to update it for 16 March before I can make it into a featured article:( . It's a shame really that we don't live in an autocracy, or I could "persuade" you to explain what the "I minus E" basis that I have to keep mentioning as an exception is. Ghere doesn't seem to be much explanation of what it is on the internet links I've found.
Anyway, despite my jesting, once I'm done with Brian Close and the Sydney Riot of 1879 I would like to make this into a FA, and any help you could give would be much appreciated. Kind regards, jguk 23:44, 23 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the info on the tax. I feel that the info you gave me could be added to the page explaining what the tax really is in simple terms for ignoramuses like me. ;) Nichalp 19:29, Feb 25, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Changing rastafari
I have put a proposal to change Rastafari at Talk:Rastafari. As far as I am aware from the debate about the Rastafarianism page there is no dispute about ending the rastafari disambiguation page, but I am checking this out to make 100% sure. If there is no conflict would you be willing to do the admin work? --SqueakBox 22:15, Mar 1, 2005 (UTC)

ALoan if you've e-mailed me, that would make two messages sucked into the wikipedia e-mail black hole. If so, perhaps you could re-send to bishonen at ungoodthinkful dot com? Bishonen | Talk 06:27, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the work you have done on this. You archived this move because no consensus had been reached. I notice you moved the main page back to Kemal Atatürk. [edit] Stalking
I can't immagine you falling out with anybody - Thanks for the support though, much appreciated, to be honest its not the ignoring I/we object to, it's not being able to respond with the other side, without breaking the 3 reverts and sounding as petty and childish as someone else does. But, I think if he starts his antics again, he will not be able to ignore anyone Giano 15:57, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Star of the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross
Hello! Your revision to Iron Cross looked really good. The Star of IC article should probably remain separate as it has the potential to expand into a large article all on its own. Its short now, but can be written upon to include bios of the two winners of the award (Bismark and von Blucher) as well as several more pictures. I am knee deep in other Germany projects right now, but will get to that eventually. -Husnock 4 Mar 05

[edit] Check it out
We have an unmitigated disaster on our hands. SimonP has been given full rein in the classical political section. He has created mixed government, politeia, classical republicanism (that starts only in the 15th century), and has now moved republicanism to republic. The republic is a total disaster. And I am not allowed to edit or do anything there. We need a Pow-wow of sorts. To sort this matter out. The proper title of "mixed government" is "Republic" or at the least a "Classical republic". We have a disaster on our hands.WHEELER 16:47, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Brian Close
Any chance you could have a look at Brian Close? It's just I haven't got many comments on it on FAC yet, and don't want it to fail for lack of comments. By the way, how's Parliament Act going - should I look at it again? Kind regards, jguk 18:16, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Socratic method and socrates
I was wondering if you could tell me why the socratic method entry was merged with the entry on socrates? it seems to me that these are two very different things- you wouldn't find Platonic love under Plato or Cartesian coordinate system under rene descartes, and it seems similar in this case. Plato suggests in the Parmenides that what we call the "Socratic method" was around before socrates; in addition, the way we use the term doesn't quite match up to the way Socrates actually taught. I couldn't find a relevant discussion on the talk pages.Heah 20:40, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks for your comments
By way of experiment (but also because I mean it) I'm personally thanking everyone who took the time to comment on Wikipedia:Countdown deletion. Without community input, the proposal is worthless, so thank you for increasing its value! JRM 14:45, 2005 Apr 6 (UTC)

[edit] SAR/Sar
(William M. Connolley 11:11, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)) Could you explain why you want the smaller Sar merged into the larger SAR, please? It seems to me that if they are merged, it should be the other way round.
- Just my perception, perhaps, but I see SAR as a special case of sar, hence listing both at the latter. Cf. cab/CAB, which have now been merged. -- ALoan (Talk) 11:49, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)
-
- (William M. Connolley 11:57, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)) [easier to have talk in one place]. Err... and why does "just your perception" make it a good idea to revert what I did without discussing it? I don't see SAR as a special case of Sar, obviously. If they must be merged (which I still disagree with) then the only "fair" way to do this seems to be smaller into larger.
-
-
- Sorry - I thought the contentious point was the merger, not where the merged article sits. By way of post-facto justification, surely the the best place for the merged page is where the most people will find it first time, which is bound to be the lower-case sar. -- ALoan (Talk) 12:01, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)
-
-
-
-
- (William M. Connolley 12:20, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)) But I had just merged them, the other way round... Well, since there are more SAR's than Sar's, people are more likely to find them first if its merged into SAR. Certainly, thats where I'm coming from.
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Perhaps, if they are following undisambiguated links to SAR rather than the correct destination, but I should have thought that people looking for SAR would be likely to type "sar" into the search box (certainly, I omit capitals in many cases, and in many cases the software helps me by catching the omission and taking me to the right page).

[edit] Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9
Thanks for doing the page move! I'm reckoning I'll be pretty much there with the text with another half-hour or so's work, then I'm going to go through and add images. Will give you a shout when I'm done.
As to future work, I've been concentrating on the volcanoes and comets recently, but was going to do some more on ionised nebulae after this - was looking at expanding Orion Nebula and Eta Carinae Nebula in particular. I'm generally more at home with the galactic than the extragalactic, but Milky Way and those stubby galaxy cluster articles definitely look like they have a lot of potential for expansion! [edit] Calling up to the scented cloud...
Delayed a bit by server issues, but I've now finished a first draft of the SL9 article and added some images, care to cast a copyediting eye over it? Any comments or suggestions? Worldtraveller 19:27, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for giving SL9 a once-over, did the article a lot of good. The 21cm emission was continuum rather than HI, updated the text accordingly. I'm really quite pleased with how the article's looking now - do you think it's about ready for FAC? Worldtraveller 10:05, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re: HIGNFY
- Hi there - I've just seen that you removed the tables at HIGNFY. I put them in to reduce the vertical space that those long lists of people take up. Was there a particular reason for you removing them?
Because it looked awful, TBH, with three columns on top of two and neither lining up.
I played about with two columns for a while (total apps. to the left, presenters to the right) in an attempt to save it, but while that looked a bit better the asymmetry in length sunk it. - SoM 19:59, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Well, it was the first thing I thought of. Perhaps a single table with 3 columns: (shown on my talk page)
Problem with that is that there's no clear distinction between the two - it looks like either three lists or one (and the headings don't stand out enough to make any distinction, especially since they're not lined up right).
I see what you're getting at here - and I kinda agree, which is why I tried the two-columns - but I don't see that there's a good way to make the tables work right, especially if it involves breaking one list up but not the other.
Plus the vast majority of lists on Wikipedia are single column, even hugely long ones, so keeping this as single column is more consistant anyway. - SoM 20:26, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Mary Seacole
Hi Prestito, (or are you Solitario, I'm never sure) to be honest Mary Seacole does not greatly excite me, I am sure she is very worthy but like Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavel etc. though to be admired, they are not really my subject. I'm just and old bore with limited interests. Regards Giano | talk 19:40, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Yes, shame we didn't run them very close, even - if the questions had come in a different order I'm sure we'd have done a lot better. And, we were the best human team in the contest. I'm actually not annoyed at all that we lost :) It was all great fun anyway.
Hope you've had a good break, wherever you've been off to (and thanks very much for voting on my admin nomination from afar!). Now you're back, would you care to have a glance over at Open cluster, which I've been working on? I nominated it on FAC, and although it's getting decent support there seem to be some concerns about comprehensiveness. Any thoughts on what else the article could do with? Worldtraveller 12:37, 10 May 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Portalspace
Just a warning. Portalspace hasn't officially been set up yet, though there is clearly a lot of support for it, and I'm sure it's only a matter of time. When it is set up, everything starting with "Portal:" will be deleted to make room for it (which is why I have a copy of the cricket portal in my userspace in case the developer creating it accidentally deletes it). So if you do move your UK portal, I recommend you take a similar precaution. I'd also recommend reducing the editor-friendly bits to an "if you would like to contribute bit", but that's because I see Portalspace as being a readerspace rather than an editorspace. Kind regards, jguk 20:55, 12 May 2005 (UTC) (PS. You'll have to add Brian Close as a featured article on there sometime! :)
[edit] Lists
Do we need an FLC tmplate for candidate talk pages? And an FL one for successful lists? Filiocht | Blarneyman 11:39, May 19, 2005 (UTC)
- I thought of that this morning too - yes. I have copied {{FAC}} and {{featured}} to {{FLC}} and {{FL}}. I also wondered whether we ought to start with transcluded subpages (like WP:FAC and WP:VfD), or let the thing evolve and see whether we need subpages - for example, WP:RM and WP:RFD seem to work well enought without, but the lack of subpages makes it rather difficult for the template to link directly to the discussion of the list's nomination. -- ALoan (Talk) 11:46, 19 May 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for sorting the templates. I guess they need to be added to the instructions on the FLC page? I'm open on the transclusion idea; it has benefits as you say, but so far the page is maybe not big enough to need it. Filiocht | Blarneyman 12:37, May 19, 2005 (UTC)
- The shortcut is a good idea. I've posted a brief notice on the Pump. Filiocht | Blarneyman 12:47, May 19, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Reverting css style?
Why have you reverted all the changes in the templates, moving the standard style to the stylesheets? Talrias (t | e | c) 22:55, 20 May 2005 (UTC)
- I was going to ask this also. Which skin are you using, because I've noticed that the new "standard style" doesn't seem to have been added to any skin other than monobook. HTH HAND --Phil | Talk 08:43, May 23, 2005 (UTC)
- I have replied to Talrias directly, and also left a further comment on Wikipedia talk:Template standardisation - I use the classic skin. You may be right that the classes have not been implemented in all skins, but I am already a bit beyond my technical competence... However, if the new styles don't work for everyone then there is clearly a problem! Using the {{standard template style}} clearly works (even if it is subst:'ed) - is this really such a poor technical solution? -- ALoan (Talk) 09:45, 23 May 2005 (UTC)
- Well, one problem is that it falls foul of a current situation which would be better to avoid. However the classic skin has now been modified, so this problem should be solved for you. HTH HAND --Phil | Talk 08:55, May 24, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Divertimento
I return for a quick look and what do I find, ramblings about some green activist no one has ever heard of, or wants to hear of, and looks like the man in Monty Python, (nothing so nice as real coral on the bathroom wall, and a stuffed albatross suspended from the ceiling, I've always thought). A huge kerfuffle because someone was so bored they put a Dalek going "exterminate" on the front page in an article about Daleks, presumably in an effort to liven things up, and Bishonen involved in a dispute so long and boring, that those who can determine what its about must have lost interest years ago. I'm worried about that woman, I think she's become genetically cloned into an admin zombi.
