[edit] DYK countitis

Updated DYK query On March 1, 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Norman Miscampbell, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Thanks very much ALoan!Blnguyen (bananabucket) 05:40, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Not a DYK award! A plea for copyedit...

Hey ALoan, I know you're busy but was hoping you could get a few moments to cast your wary eye over Adam Gilchrist. Dweller and I have done quite a lot of work on the article in order to push it for GA/FA before the World Cup, but I know you'll be able to make many suggestions and modifications before I nominate it. Anything you could do would be great. Cheers for now. The Rambling Man 07:54, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes, him and Harbhajan Singh... -- ALoan (Talk) 09:29, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
TRM is too kind. He's done a lot of work on it. I've chipped in. But your expertise will be very helpful. --Dweller 09:50, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
Your copyedit skills are very much in demand...! <nudge nudge> ;-) --Dweller 15:24, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
Ha! Well, I have done my best. -- ALoan (Talk) 11:13, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] List of members of the Riksdag, 2002-2006

Care to drop by Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of members of the Swedish Riksdag, 2002-2006 again? Thank you. Jobjörn (Talk ° contribs) 21:59, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mark Fletcher

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Mark Fletcher, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. RJASE1 Talk 01:50, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Gosh, I don't remember one of my aricles being "PRODed" before - how exciting.
Let me see:
  • he founded Bloglines (for which we have an article, and for which the concurrent AFD seems to be a clear "keep")
  • he won an award in 2005 ahead of sucn non-notables as Jimmy Wales - who? - Adam Curry, Zhang Zuoyi and Bill Healy) in 2005
  • he started ONElist (for which we have an article, and which later became Yahoo! Groups)
Even ignoring that he was a vice-president of ask.com until June 2006 - which is relatively notable, but not outstandingly so, I guess - surely any one of these is sufficient? One of the things that Wikipedia is not is a paper encyclopedia. -- ALoan (Talk) 09:50, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Paul Collingwood

Hey, thanks to your copyediting skills and the efforts of a number of other editors, Paul Collingwood was promoted to featured article this morning! Thanks for all your help. The Rambling Man 09:58, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

I know I'm pushing my luck but any chance you could copyedit Adam Gilchrist before too long? I think the article is virtually ready for FA nomination. There are a couple of citations needed, but I was hoping you could cast your wise eyes over it anyway. Thanks again, The Rambling Man 10:14, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I will get to it eventually ... -- ALoan (Talk) 11:13, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Portal:United Kingdom/Did you know

Hi, Sorry I don't understand your comment. I put these into the month & year when they appeared on the front page - but they did not at the time appear in the UK section, but all relate to UK topics. You suggested "If you think they are worth mentioning, you could add them to one of the DYKs that will appear in April, May or a later month." - but they would not be the months in which they appeared- surely the point of an archive is to show what has happened in the past & when. I don't understand how you can have entries in months in the future? — Rod talk 11:25, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

OK I understand now, I didn't read the instruction fully because on Template talk:Did you know it says (at the bottom) "Please archive Did you know entries thematically at the relevant portal:" with a link to the Portal:United Kingdom/Did you know.— Rod talk 11:47, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
Ah - thanks. I did not realise that there was an instructions at the bottom of T:TDYK. Perhaps that should be changed... -- ALoan (Talk) 13:46, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Adam Gilchrist

Allow me to lighten your mood a little. Following the successes of the West Indies in England and Paul Collingwood articles, I've nommed Gilly for FA. It's got >120 refs and I think is pretty close to being ready. Your expert attention will be gratefully received... have you time to run a copy edit? Cheers. Serious kudos to The Rambling Man - this one's been mostly his labour of love, much as Harbhajan is proving to be mostly Blnguyen. --Dweller 21:45, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Harbhajan Singh

Thankyou very much. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 05:05, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "go look it up"

I did. It's still meaningless. What is a "highest" for of music? - NYC JD (make a motion) 20:20, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

I have no idea - most complex? Most developed? Most popular? Most refined? Perhaps the cited source (Benitez, Kristina. The Maguindanaon Kulintang: Musical Innovation, Transformation and the Concept of Binalig. Ann Harbor, MI: University of Michigan, 2005.) will tell you.
You were concerned that this might be the author's own POV judgment, but a source it cited. We are allowed to add POV statements so long as they are attributed to a source ("X considers Y is great, but Z thinks it is awful"). But if you are aware of another form of Filipino gong music that is considered to be "higher" by critics, and can cite a source saying as much, please feel free to edit the article. -- ALoan (Talk) 23:35, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
No, I am not aware of any such thing. I just dislike non-factual hooks of this type. Neither you nor I have any idea what being the "highest" entails, even where a source is adduced. That probably means it's not an appropriate hook for DYK, even if this book does indeed say that - NYC JD (make a motion) 23:42, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: page moves

Thanks for pointing that out to me. I used the Move button on all of my moves except for two of them that had the official title as a redirect. I didn't know that the edit history wouldn't come with it, so I appreciate the correction. I've directed those two pages to the WPMILHIST Lead and asked him to fix my screw-ups for me. In the future, I'll direct those requests to the right people. Thanks! --ScreaminEagle 21:56, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Can you please update DYK. --Parker007 00:18, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] John Lindsay Eric Smith on DYK for 6 March 2007

[edit] DYK noms

I noticed that you are adding to the next update page. I took a look at the Paul Callow article. After removing a POV statement, it is just under the minimum page length. — ERcheck (talk) 13:02, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

I think I would keep it in - it can only be a few characters under 1,500. -- ALoan (Talk) 13:06, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi ALoan do you these Bastards are good enough for DYK? Have a nice day! Giano 13:10, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Abso-bloody-lutely. What a nice article. -- ALoan (Talk) 13:13, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Do you want to nominate it then, cos I don't know how to do these things Giano 13:32, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
I will if you would rather not do it yourself - you just need to add a snippet from the article - something short to catch the interest of the reader on the Main Page - under the right date heading (for the date when it was created or exanded) on T:TDYK.
It is pretty easy, to be honest - it is by far the easiest way to get anything on the Main Page now. Given the number of excellent articles that you produce - even the short ones - it is surprising that more don't turn up there. -- ALoan (Talk) 13:36, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
I'm not editing the main page - it would probably fall to peices on me - no you do it -please! Giano 13:49, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
No, no - we don't let humble peons esteemed editors edit the Main Page: you have to proffer humble make suggestions to your betters interested admins, who weigh the pros and cons in the balance, consider the lily, read the entrails, drink deeply of the Pierian spring, consult the Pythia, and after all that (if they don't have indigestion) may then edit the templates that appear on the Main Page if divine grace moves them to intercede on your behalf.
(The process is a bit more mundane and a bit more complex that that, actually - editors add a hook to the suggestions page, wait for comments, and eventually the hook may make its way to the "next update" page, and from there it should be copied to the Main Page. But really the nominator only has to add a short hook to the suggestions page and wait.) -- ALoan (Talk) 14:00, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

I could probably work up the Una Troubridge article. 1500 words? It's on my list of things to do... Fluffball70 20:30, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] DYK

Ty for the DYKs. Yes, I will try to add some more, but its a bit old now so thats too bad. Anonymous Dissident 05:33, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: DYK Ahmed Hasan Dani

[edit] DYK

I guess you must've forgotten to include Charles E. Peterson on DYK. You notified the article creator and me and removed it from suggestions' page, but you just didn't include it on next update or the DYK template itself, using only five entries. That's no problem, I've made my fair share of mistakes on DYK myself. I just wanted to make you aware of this. Maybe we should include the entry the next time DYK is updated.

Happy editing,

-- Carabinieri 18:51, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

That is bizarre. I certainly meant to select it - in fact, I even remember tweaking the hook a little. I must have deleted it accidentally in rearranging the hooks on Next Update before they went to the main page. Thanks for spotting it, and sorry for any confusion. -- ALoan (Talk) 19:19, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
Similarly bizarre things have happened to me. I've added it to next update, so it will be included next time.-- Carabinieri 22:19, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
