[edit] History

Alliance was established and started operations in early August 2002 when Brisbane-based Queensland Airline Holdings acquired the assets of the dormant Flight West Airlines [1], which had been established on 25 May 1987 and was liquidated in 2001.

Alliance had wet leasing contracts with Norfolk Jet Express, until that airline was liquidated on 4 June 2005. For the first week after liquidation, Alliance were used for services, but Qantas soon overtook these services from June 11, using Air Nauru (now "Our Airline") aircraft. Alliance currently holds wet-leasing contracts with Air Niugini for Papua New Guinea and North Queensland services.

Charter flights are operated primarily for the resources sector. Alliance Airlines currently flies from Townsville to Phosphate Hill (Incitec Pivot - Southern Cross Operations), Century Mine (Zinifex Limited), Gove (Alcan), Cloncurry (Xstrata) and Cannington Mine (BHP Billiton). Alliance Airlines currently flies from Brisbane to Gove (Alcan), Ballera (Santos) and Telfer (Byrnecut). From November 2006, Alliance Airlines started operating charter services from Perth to Mount Keith (BHP Billiton) and Leinster (BHP Billiton). Charter services also extend from Brisbane to Canberra and the Australian Defence Forces use Alliance for charter flights to East Timor and the Solomon Islands.

Since mid-2005 Alliance has suspended its scheduled passenger services, instead focusing further on its charter activities.
