Started in 1993 in Los Angeles by French expatriate Patrick Boissel, Alive Records grew out of his association with U.S. label Bomp! Records, a pioneer indie label launched in 1974 by underground music writer Greg Shaw, and run since Shaw's death by his ex-wife and life long partner Suzy Shaw.

Alive records catalogue originally focused on reissues of artists such as Mick Farren of the Deviants, Nikki Sudden and the Swell Maps, and John Sinclair of the MC5, until it entered in a distribution deal with Mordam records in 2001. By then, Boissel changed the label's direction, renamed it Alive-Natural Sound, and started signing new acts, including the Akron blues rock duo The Black Keys. In 2002, Alive-Natural Sound released The Big Come Up, the album which launched the Black Keys' career.

The Alive-Natural Sound roster also includes San Fransisco gutter-country duo Two Gallants, currently on Saddle Creek records, as well as SSM (ex-Hentchmen, Paybacks, and Cyril Lords), San Francisco Trainwreck Riders, Buffalo Killers (ex-Thee Shams), Black Diamond Heavies, Radio Moscow (produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys), the Soledad Brothers, Turpentine Brothers, The Howling Diablos, The Bloody Hollies, US Bombs, Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, and The Love Drunks. Their most recent addition is Brimstone Howl.
