Alister, known in Japan as Amelda (アメルダ Ameruda), is one of the main antagonists in the Waking the Dragons (or Doma) story arc of the Yu-Gi-Oh! second anime series, which is known as Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters in Asia. He does not exist in the manga.
Alister is generally considered to be the weakest of Dartz's three swordsmen. He was also the first to lose his soul. Alister has a deck full of army Monsters but he used Maximillion Pegasus' (Pegasus J. Crawford in the Japanese version) deck on his first duel with Seto Kaiba. Alister often quarrels with Valon over whose target is stronger. Alister also bought over half of Seto Kaiba's company, but it's unclear whether he used Pegasus's money or money from the Paradius corporation. Alister has a very feminine-looking face, and has often been mistaken for a woman by fans of the series.
Note: While it's unknown where the Japanese name Amelda came from, his dub name was based on Aleister Crowley, the British occultist who created the Unicursal Hexagram, the symbol used for the Seal of Orichalcos. The obscurity of this fact is most likely what helped it slip past the censors.
[edit] History
When Alister was a child, the country he lived in was torn apart by war. In the dub, Kaiba Corp. bought the land from the city. When the residents refused to leave, Gozaburo Kaiba decided to force them out. Many were forced to dig tunnels and steal food to survive. Alister and his brother managed to survive. In the original Japanese, there was a war going on between two countries, and Gozaburo Kaiba supplied the weapons to both sides. In the English version, Alister's brother, Mikey, was eventually captured. In the Japanese version, his brother (Miruko in the Japanese version) was killed when the tank he was in blew up. Alister has hated Seto Kaiba ever since and has designated him as his target. Dartz found him and offered him the chance to join his organization, DOOM (named Doma in the Japanese version). Unknown to Alister, Dartz disguised himself as Gozaburo Kaiba and was responsible for the attack. One of Alister's treasured keepsakes is his brother's broken action figure, Dyna Dude, from the monster Air Fortress Ziggurat (for this monster, Dyna Dude is a robot token).
Alister masquerades as Maximillion Pegasus and buys a majority stock of Kaiba's company under this guise. Kaiba flies to Duelist Kingdom and challenges him. Partway through the duel, Alister reveals his true identity and continues the duel by activating the Seal of Orichalcos. Kaiba draws the Fang of Critius, and duels Alister to a draw: thus, no soul is taken. Alister later hijacks Kaiba's airship and duels him again. During this duel, Alister realizes the bond that Kaiba shares with Mokuba is similar to the one he shared with his own brother, and thus lets Kaiba win, refusing to force the same separation he suffered on them. Kaiba carries his soulless body to safety once the plane crashes, and Alister is restored following the defeat of Dartz.
[edit] Notable Dueling Cards
Alister utilizes three decks during the series, one of them being a Toon Deck since he was masquerading as Maximillion Pegasus when Seto Kaiba came to confront him. It is likely that this is Pegasus' own deck although it seems to have a great deal more cards than Pegasus had at Duelist Kingdom. The Toon monsters that Alister summons are powerful, with their immunity to destruction in battle and their ability to assault Kaiba directly, as his Toon Dark Magician Girl does. After Kaiba destroys Toon World with A Wingbeat of Giant Dragon, Alister reveals himself and begins to use his second deck, a Pyro Deck.
Alister's Pyro Deck is largely based on one card: Gorlag, which can resummon any monster it destroys on Alister's field and turn them into Fire-Type Monsters. Furthermore, Gorlag can gain 500 Attack Points for every Fire-Type monster on the field, further increasing its attack strength. Alister attempts to make the duel a straightforward affair with Royal Decree, which negates all Trap Cards on the field. It is likely that Kaiba would have lost had he not drawn the Fang of Critias, as Alister had his Gorlag and two of Kaiba's Blue-Eyes White Dragons on his field.
When Alister next encounters Kaiba, he uses an Army Deck, which uses cards to reflect the incident that happened in Alister's past where KaibaCorp-financed troops destroyed his village and killed his brother. Using cards such as KC-1 Crayton and Spell Canceller, Alister attempted to remove any sort of strategy Kaiba could throw at him. When Kaiba begins to make another comeback, Alister summons Air Fortress Ziggurat, his most powerful monster with 2500 Attack Points, further enhanced to 3000 via the Seal of Orichalcos. Furthermore, reminiscent of his brother's favorite toy, it spawns a Toy Robot Token at the start of every turn.
