[edit] Career

Fighting mostly in 2 Hot 2 Handle and Rings, Overeem first entered PRIDE in July 2002 defeating Yusuke Imamura via TKO in only 44 seconds. He returned to PRIDE in December (PRIDE 24-Cold Fury 3) to face Bazigit Atajev. Overeem gave Atajev his first, and currently only loss, in the end of round 2 with a knee to the body. His next PRIDE fight would come in June 2003 at PRIDE 26-Bad to the Bone where he defeated unexperienced Mike Bencic. 2 months later, he fought in PRIDE's middle weight tournament, Total Elimination 2003, losing to Chuck Liddell, who is currently the UFC light-heavy weight champion (Liddell was not the champion in 2003). Overeem rebounded to defeat Tomohiko Hashimoto, at Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye festival in December, in only 36 seconds. On October 31, 2004 he fought Hiromitsu Kanehara, defeating him by TKO (cut) part-way through the first round, at PRIDE 28-High Octane. He lost his next fight, at PRIDE 29-Fists of Fire, against Brazilian Top Team fighter Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (twin brother of PRIDE heavyweight fighter Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira). Overeem competed again in PRIDE's middle weight tournament at Total Elimination 2005, defeating The Phenom, Vitor Belfort. He would move on to fight Igor Vovchanchyn, taking under 2 minutes to win by submission (guillotine choke). Overeem suffered another loss at Final Conflict 2005 to Mauricio Rua, who went on to defeat Ricardo Arona and win the tournament. In February 2006 Overeem fought Russian Top Team favorite Sergei Kharitonov. Overeem won the fight, dislocating Kharitonov's shoulder in the process, with knee strikes. Following his win Overeem fought Croatian kickboxer Sanjin Kadunc, submitting him in under 2 minutes with an armbar. With his win over Kharitonov, Overeem secured a spot in PRIDE's open-weight grand prix. He fought Brazilian jiu jitsu specialist Fabricio Werdum. Werdum won in the second round with a kimura submission to move on to the second round. After his loss, Overeem went to San Jose, California to fight Vitor Belfort for a second time at the Strikeforce event Revenge. Despite being the main event, Overeem pulled out a decision win in a lackluster fight. A month later Overeem returned to PRIDE for a highly anticipated rematch with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, despite being injured coming into the fight. Early in the second round as Overeem stumbled from a punch, Rogerio Nogueira threw a flurry of punches. Worried Overeem would be more severely injured, his corner threw in the towel.

At PRIDE Final Conflict Absolute (September 10, 2006), he lost to Ricardo Arona. Overeem was on the receiving end of a leg-kick that caused a non-serious injury to his nerves, causing him to lose feeling in his foot and leg. Unable to mount an offense or defend against Arona, Overeem tapped out to avoid further injury.

His last fight was a knockout loss to Mauricio Rua.

Overeem speaks fluent English and German along with his native tongue of Dutch.
