[edit] Research methodology
The style, the subject, the preservation state, mounts, pigments and technic are many criteria. For works which don't have any history, scientific methods are necessary so as to know more about pictorial coat, surface roughness, potential touched-up area less than 80 years thanks to ultraviolet, apocryphal signature, failings or flaking of... and for example chemical analysis of pigments, Castaing's electronic microprobe (X-rays so as to look at the « skeleton » of the work), fiber-optic microprobe, radiocarbon dating and dendrochronology.
