From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alice Russell is a British female soul singer on the Tru Thoughts label. Her recent tracks with Will Holland's Quantic and Quantic Soul Orchestra projects have increased her profile.
She is from Framlingham in Suffolk and attended amongst others, Thomas Mills High School where she sang with the school choir. She has 2 older sisters, also musicians called Naomi and Rebecca.
Her style incorporates elements of blues, jazz and soul but also includes elements of funk, gospel and jazz.
Russell's father is an organist/music teacher and this combined with her experience of singing in various choirs provided a classical background to her music.
Alice Russell has claimed her influences include Minnie Ripperton, Eva Cassidy, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin and Jill Scott [citation needed].
She has provided vocals for Bah Samba (who released on Estereo Recordings), where she uses latin sounds combined with house, and jazz and funk. Her work with band Kushti incorporates more laidback, hip hop and soul inspired sounds.
Her solo work is performed in a nine-piece band called "Alice Russell Live". In July 2004, Russell delivered her debut solo album, "Under The Munka Moon" , for Tru Thoughts Recordings. A mixture of her earlier collaborative efforts and new material. Under The Munka Moon includes tracks written with Bah Samba, Kushti, Nature Boy, and Quantic, with additional production and remix work from Digitek, Atjazz, and Plaid.
She also performed the lead vocals on a cover of The White Stripes hit "Seven Nation Army" with Nostalgia 77.
