Alice Holt Forest

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alice Holt Forest is an ancient forest south west of Farnham in Surrey near the village of Rowledge. It is noted for its oak trees which once supplied timber for navy ships. Recently Alice Holt oak has been used to build a replica of Shakespeare's Globe theatre in London. [1]

Part of the forest is designated as a research area, used for studies into subjects such as forest carbon dynamics, environmental change and wood fuels. [2]

[edit] History

The forest is believed to have originated in the Atlantic period. Iron Age and Roman relics indicate human habitation for over two thousand years, and the forest was used as a Royal hunting forest by William the Conqueror.[3]
