[edit] Appearances

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

[edit] Shadow Hearts

She is one of the main playable characters in Shadow Hearts and the eventual love interest of the protagonist Yuri Volte Hyuga.

The story begins with her father being murdered on a rainy night. She was accompanying him and witnessed his death but managed to get away. A month later she is being transferred by the Japanese army heading for Fengtian on a steam train [4]. It is here where she first meets the villain of the game and Yuri for the first time, as the villain tries to kidnap her and Yuri attempts to save her. It is here where the story of Shadow Hearts begins.

Her fate and the ending of Shadow Hearts depend on certain actions the player does in the game regarding Yuri, Alice's sacrifice in the graveyard and the masks. The result is the player receives one of two endings to Shadow Hearts: one good (in which Alice lives), one bad (in which she dies). The 'bad ending' is considered canon as it is a plot piece in the sequel, Shadow Hearts: Covenant.

[edit] Shadow Hearts: Covenant

She is not a playable character in Shadow Hearts: Covenant but she does appear in numerous cutscenes throughout the game and is an important part of the story in certain sections.

At one point, quite late in the game, the player can visit the location Zurich and it is revealed Alice has been buried there. The words "Be at peace Alice Elliot! This I swear to you...your soul will have my life-long love. Yours, Yuri." were written in her tombstone. In another part of the game it is also revealed to the player, by Jeanne, that Yuri buried Alice in his long coat that he wore during the first game.

A key point in the game revolves around Yuri trying to resurrect Alice using the forbidden Emigre Manuscript. The game hints at this possibility early on in a cutscene involving the Emigre Manuscript and Alice suddenly appearing in Yuri's head (accompanied by her theme music) when he comes into contact with the book. Later on in the game he attempts the resurrection with the Emigre Manuscript, and despite all other attempts resulting in demons and not the original soul coming back, this one time, the correct soul is called back- but the body she is called back to is unstable. In a cutscene called "The Miracle", Alice manages to use her already disappearing body to tell Yuri she loves him, to which Yuri replies, tearfully, that he loves her too. Afterwards, her soul returns back to the afterlife and the body disappears.

Alice also appears in a cutscene called "The Oath" which revolves around the journey they went through together and what Yuri would do if he had just one wish [5]. If the player chooses later in the game the option necessary to acquire the 'good ending', the game ends with Yuri going back to that time when he first met Alice, when he was the happiest [6].

[edit] Chaos Wars

Alice appears in Chaos Wars, a tactical role-playing game for the Playstation 2 released in September 2006 in Japan [7] [8]. Her appearance, as well as other characters appearances from the Shadow Hearts series, should not be considered canon.

Spoilers end here.
